I need some help with a final decision - long story short.
Im getting a new camera!!! (Probably my last for a long time,
so I want to make the right decison. I've narrowed it down to 3:
Nikon Coolpix 8800, Fujifilm 9000S or Panasonic DMC-FZ30.
Anyone who has one I would appreciate some pros & cons.
Thank you VERY much!! Medinfo2000

Hello,

The only one I've used is the DMC-FZ30, it belonged to a friend. In fact it was the reason I jumped in to the DSLR club with my D70.

The DMC-FZ30 took really great looking shots. Camera was easy to use and has many Dslr features. In fact about the only thing I couldn't do with it was change lenses!

Once I decided to purchase, I was about to get the DMC-FZ30 but saved a few more pennies and got the D70. I really like the D70 but the DMC-FZ30 is a good cam.

I can't say anything about the other two cameras, but the Panasonic is a great camera. It will do almost anything you want it to, but it also suffers from a noise problem. You are almost better off trying to find a FZ20 or FZ5 though. The FZ20 has a constant f/2.8 aperature throughout the entire zoom range, one feature the FZ30 lacks. I have the 4MP version of the FZ5 (FZ4) and I love it, but I'm getting to the point where it is limiting my ability to do things. I am going to keep it around for a while when I buy my DSLR just to keep that huge zoom around. It works great and if you want to see some examples of what mine can do, you can have a look at my portfolio or anyone else that has a Panasonic FZ series camera.

Hi John

I have the FZ30 and find that its a great camera in general, my only problem is that it can be very noisy. The noise isn't a problem for personal use and making fine prints, but if you plan on shooting any kind of stock or commercial photography in the future I'd advise against it.

If thats the case get a budget DSLR like a D50, or 300D, or one of the Olympus ones, I think you can find those for around the price of the FZ30.

Of course you wouldn't have the kind of lens range with an entry level DSLR and kit lens as you would with the FZ30 but the images will be a world apart as far as quality goes.

So, I guess the question is what do you want to do with the camera and what are your long term goals (since you said this will probably be your new camera for a long time).
