first timer too and my score is quite good. from what ive seen certain types of photos do seem to do better. if its too abstract then people dont get it in those 2 seconds and you fail.
the shot i took was actually an outake from the shoot but i thought it fit the "round" description more. anyway i can almost guarantee that i would have done better with the shot that turned out how i wanted it.
you will see after the challenge when i post it.
i will probably kick myself.

To all newbies, sorry to be pedantic, but DPC is a place where ONLY CERTAIN KINDS of photos do really well. It isn't difficult to forget that your photos may be brilliant, even if they don't score well.

First tip: most folks will look at your photo for about 2 seconds here. That's what you get to communicate what you want to communicate--2 bleeping seconds.

6.15 on my first entry and man, was I hooked. Haven't done that well since, but am creeping slowly upwards as I look and learn. Or...at least I was until today. 8-( I still have hope, though and feel that what I've discovered from looking at other photos and trying new things and continuing to learn, I will get another 6+ some day.

My first entry too, and it's at 5.3692 after 65 votes. Didn't really expect it. :)

My first-ever entry scored a 4.713.

For reference, the average vote over the entire history of the site is about 5.22. That covers all entries, not just first entries.

I ended up at 5.222 on my first challenge - which I was pretty stoked about. More "important" to me was that I placed 83 out of 203. I usually feel like if I finish in the top 50%, I'm doing OK. Scores seem to ebb and flow with how many people vote, who votes, how happy or disgruntled the voters are with a given challenge or entries in general, etc. But, during the voting, yeah, anything over 5 is worth feeling satisfied with, at least for me. (I know there are some here who won't settle for anything less than a 6 - maybe some day I'll be able to afford that attitude!)

Yipeee!! Got my first comment and very flattering! Thanks (oops!) I guess taking names would be pointing fingers :D

Still at 5.1515 after 66 votes

My first score was 6.484 but I got lucky, because the challenge was photojournalism which is what I do best (my winner was in Magazine cover) my lowest score on this site was 4.024 my highest ever score was 7.454 the lowest came right after the highest... hehehe... 5 is a very solid first score!
07/16/2003 11:40:53 AM · #13
My first score was 5.5, which is just above my overall 5.4 average. I finally broke the 6 barrier with a few of shots. Still waiting on the one that breaks 7.
07/16/2003 11:36:05 AM · #14
my first was 5.305 and my best 5.691

For the first timer,
An easy way to tell how you did in an individual challenge is to average the highest and lowest score, and then compare your score to the average. This will keep you on top of what/how you do each time.

Hey, your roadkill was more tasteful than my roadkill. :-> Which still got a 4.438, and the largest number of comments of ANY of my submissions so far.

There's always some extremist lurking about ....

First entry scored 7.641

Was quite happy with that.
07/16/2003 11:02:58 AM · #20
4.953
The whole 5 average theory remains accurate!

Just from my first submission I got comments that blew me away...
I'm not used to such helpful critiques!

Only about 5-10% of the WINNING PHOTOS top 8.

It's easier than that General: there are only 11 shots that score 8 or above.

11 out of 117 challenges is close enough to 10% for me (for a "guesstimate").

The last challenge winner scored an even 7.000.

Wheeee!

I am also a first time entrant and long time lurker. Very proud of 5.19 with 21 votes

dacrazyrn that roadkill is great. Nothing sick about death. The fact that you caught it with a bare tree (or dead tree) just makes it. Maybe you should have photographed a fluffy kitten.

Another message for the new person: Don't worry too much about that score. There is no such thing as a professional critic. If there was a greatest photo in history, it might come in anywhere from 1st to 80th on here.
