I'd be surprised if "headlight" weren't being used as photographic slang for a strong, reflectorized floodlight, which is exactly what a car's headlight is. In other words, the opposite of a diffused light, a harsh and powerful light.

Check out //www.vividlight.com/articles/1615.htm , it discusses many of these lighting techniques and is only a page or so.
Rim lighing is another name for back lighting (and is different than background lighting).
Never heard "Headlight" before except in relation to automobiles. Could it be a snooted light to give a little more illumination to the subject's face? E.g. in a full-length portrait of a dark-skined bride, you'd want to put more light on her face because there's such a contract between the white dress and dark skin.

- It does not have to be in front. It can be on the side, even behind the subject. It is the primary light which is stronger than the other lights.
Fill is usually what 'adds' light to a scene (usually from the sides or 45degree angle), correct?
- Correct. Again, direction can be from anywhere.

- Hair light is usually used from behind/top of the subject, to seperate the hair from the background, where the background is dark. Can also be used from behind to make a 'rim' around the hair.

- Correct. Strong background lights are used to blow out the background and make it white.
Never heard of a headlight. Maybe someone made that up for themselves.

I was actually wondering if headlight was a hair light since it deals with the models head...good question

Light types - there are 2 - direct and diffused. Direct will give you more contrast, hard shadwos, sharp shadow edges, etc like a sunny day outside.
diffused is softer, soft edged shadows (if any shadows) and less contrast. think overcast day.
Now you can adjust these in intensity and of course direction or mix them up.
I assume this is what you are referring to. I have never heard the term 'headlight' - you have main/key, fill, rim, hair, spot, background and variations on them.

Hey everyone,
I'm reading mags and journals all over the place to learn a bit more about lighting, since it seems its really my problem at the moment (especially since the recipe challenge).
Can someone put a model, name or proper description concerning these two types of lighting hardware?
"Headlight"
and
"Diffuser Light".
