****Resurrecting this post again; just to say; I did erroneously say "there before the grace of God Go I" when it is "but for."
I would have to say after reading this whole thread that the so called "bad" shots are often the gems of this site.
Just like a consumer that strives for the look of the "girl in the fashion magazine," we all chase the phantom that is the sharp, oversaturated candy photography, shallow and much like postcards and hotel art. The real deal, the shapely woman, the woman with brains and some junk in the trunk, just like that, those are the photos that we should praise and elevate.

Ah well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there is no accounting for taste and sometimes we are not awake yet and can't see our screens.
However, I am 9th on the Hor or Not Listall is well with the world. :)

All my shots are bad because i need new glasses and i use a mac with an old monitor, and im color blind so everything looks kickass to me. :D
And im out of beer. |

I think it took me eight hours to read that ! LOL
Basically, everyone has their reasons, so here's mine.
Early on, I was REALLY trying to enter all the contests without skip any. It didn't work out, of course, because whenever I squeezed in the time to snap the pic and submit, it didn't turn out great (suprise, surprise).
Now, I have become more meticulous and for me this can mean taking 200+ pics or more. My technique of submitting last minute pics was painful for me, but the feedback was fantastic. I feel encouraged when I see the portofolios of those I admire and see their learning curves.
In short, yes, I submitted suckfest pics kinda on purpose, just to see if I could meet my personal goal (If I don't look closely, they're still sorta pretty to me, tho!) . :p
Hey, I love that I can come here to live and learn.

There is not really an issue with bad pictures being posted. Modern technology, unfortunately or fortunately, has enable us to acquire and hence send information - in any form - at a great speed. Let alone the fact that digital cameras give you the freedom to photograph anything! So the point is not really why people post bad pictures - the answer is that they do because they can. A hypothetical issue that would require lots of pages to tackle would be if they are actually aware the pictures they send are bad. But again you have another issue coming up... Subjectivity.
I have been a member of different photography fora for the past 2 years and this question is on the air, always... There is not really a straight answer to it but a plain suggestion: personal crtitique, practice, godd use of the DEL button and study of the Great Photographers and their meaning. |

I don't give a crap what anyone looks like, but to be able to take a great picture of what would usually be considered an ugly person is an art unto itself.
Pretty people are easier to take pretty photographs of, that's all. |

If y'all are going to resurect this thread all I ask is that you please read the entire thing before adding an emotional response to it. There was a lot of misunderstanding in the thread and a lot of name calling.
I don't believe it was anyone's intention (I know it wasn't mine) to offend anyone or scare anyone off from the site.
I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings. |

| i enjoy some of the shots some may think they are aweful or they dont understand like my shots. but yet in galleries and classes i teach i get some praise. its kind of funny i have a lot of you cant be serious comments i just laugh |

I just finished commenting on every photo I gave a 10 to in the Best of 2005 challenge.
I flirted briefly with commenting on every photo I gave a 1 to, about the same number, but decided not to. It's sad, because the 1's probably need the comments more than the 10's. But so often the comments aren't appreciated.
So here's my offer. If your photo ranks in the bottom 10% of the "Best of 2005" challenge, and you would sincerely appreciate some candid feedback on it ... just PM me after voting ends and I will respond with a thoughtful, direct, and hopefully constructive comment. |
