I actually happen to know that dr3amz started this threat, sorry thread, just to increase his profile views :-)

What a hot thread! I feel a bit uncomfortable in such temperature, but nevertheless I want to call for positive thinking here.
Yes, I enjoy originality and wow effect of photos and it makes me to score these photos high.
Yes, there are themes people like to capture and share, but high scores are strong arguments confirming they are far from being alone here.
Yes, I also paid attention to Northern Lights theme repetition, but decided to score high all of them, because it's a stunning beauty!
Yes, it's a good idea to look around before venting - just not to make somebody feel really bad.
And yes - it would be boring if all of us would share same opinion or would be afraid to express it "just not to be shut down".
Tolerance is what I'm still learning.

So you are saying that little things like composition, focus, and exposure mean nothing anymore? Anyone can take a long shutter speed shot of flowing water, but to take a good one still requires skill in the areas I mentioned.

It is kind of like having a supermodel as your subject, just because she is beautiful does not mean you will be able to portray her that way. If you cannot do something interesting with composition, focus it properly, and obtain proper exposure, (not to mention interesting lighting) it will still look like what it is, a crummy picture.

I'm not fond of baby shots and don't think it fits in to many challenges ugly or otherwise. I would vote lower if I didn't like the subject but not a one. Clats, flowers, bugs, sunsets people and kids all fit into a overdone catagorey by your definitions. You shoot what you have around or you think makes for a good photo and what will appeal to the masses. To sit and cry about something being over done is foolish not to mention childish.

I'm done here I'm gonna get my rake and open the bar. This is enough to make a person drink.

edit: I guess your gonna reply that drinking is way over done??? FA Q

Northern lights, fair comment from others, there just seem to be people that either have multiple accounts and shoot from the same location, or they live very close to eachother and shoot from the same location!

seeing one shot of something, and then another a couple of inches to the left or right just gets you suss i guess :-)

Iceland is about the size of Kentucky and has a total population of under 300,000 people, of whom well over half (+/- 180,000) live in Reykjavik or its immediate environs. Small wonder they end up shooting in the same places :-) We may also assume (in fact we KNOW) that a lot of Icelandic DPCers are acquainted with each other, and go shooting together frequently.

I never get tired of seeing the Aurora borealis. Its absolutely magical to me. I'm fortunate enough to be able to see the lights dance on a regular basis with my job and everytime I do I get lost in the show. To see someone capture them in a picture and have them look as incredible as they do in person provides me with one of those inner smiles. I'm instantly taken back to the magic... and thankful to live in a world as beautiful as this one can be.

~meh.. but thats just me~

how can you leave a message like that when your highest rated photos are of water drops and a baby. Let people photo what they want, moving water is a great way for a newbie to experiment with shutter speeds and get good results, as is sunsets and moonlit pictures. Babies are easy to experiment with soft light, filler flash, b/w with filters. If a picture is technically correct and fits the challenge, it should get a good score, if it is technically correct and creatively impressive, it deserves a great score.

The real problems are the people who send in candid snapshots as contest entries, those are a true waste of everyones time.

accepted - but i said obviously outstanding shots will be rewarded with higher ratings, i'm just tired of seeing the same old `water trick` - whats wrong with a normal shot of a river etc, without blurred water? done proplerly it can still be amazing and doesn't need to rely on the effect of blurring the water to look good.

just venting as i say, i've not seen many water `drop` shots since i've been here - people talk about them as if they are abused, but i've only seen a few in challenges!!!

as for water flowing shots, way overdone, the percentage of these vs water drop shots is massive!

my baby shot i thought shoulda gotten higher, ive seen a lot of er... `scary` babys on this site, and pictures taken with no effort - just a snapshot of their child, so people down mark because its a baby - again i've not seen many `babies` on here - maybe young children sure.

It really is boring to see now, unless something exceptional appears - which is rare.

Northern lights too, in the current challenge there are 3 shots all from the same location - are people using multiple accouts or what?

Either way - its sleep inducing and I for one am going to rate any such shots (unless amazing) a flat ONE from here-on in!

Get creative for Gods sake! (i heard he's seen enough too! :-)

How would you feel if you had entered a shot of the Northern Lights and somebody started a thread saying they were sick & tired of seeing them?

Do you think that might tick you off just a little bit? Especially if you felt your shot was a fairly good one and were looking forward to a decent score?

If it really bothers you so much that there are some shots in a challenge that you dislike, or like, that you feel compelled to start a thread about it, why not wait until after voting? That way more people will have seen what you talking about and you will get more intelligent, and perhaps sympathetic, posts in your thread. And there will be less chance of hurting people's feelings, just in case you cared about that.

I think some people should have had just chose the Blue Pill. Besides what really gets under my skin is people who answer their cell phones in mid-conversation. Also people eating chicken mcnuggets with tons of bbq sauce, with long fingernails, while talking to ya. Gawd that makes Mad! :)

Damn - I was hoping to get this thread locked with my original post, or at least moved to the Rant section. I guess I'll have to try harder.

Gayle, the reason I came out so hard on the original post is because it was in a mean-spirited manner. There was no effort to offer suggestions on how to improve either the abilities of individual photographers or the performance of this site. It was a simple rant designed to show superiority.

I mean seriously, questioning that there should be three shots of northern lights in one challenge? We have 317 people registered on this site who hail from Iceland alone. The assertion was ridiculous to begin with.

What justifies the label "whiner" in my opinion is when someone tears others down without offering any constructive criticism that serves to rebuild. The original post was not an opinion, but simply a lashing out.

Unfortunately, this is becoming a more common occurance as time goes on. People react to the fact that unoriginal ideas still score well and even will ribbons. They operate under the assumption that originality is high on voters' list of priorities as they cast. Historically speaking, it is not. If you want to see Originality, PROPOSE A CHALLENGE BY THAT NAME.

Only then, when the inevitable unoriginal photos are entered, do such opinions become worthy of debate.

How does one request that a thread be relegated to the Rant section?

I would agree with you, but the problem is this thread didn't start with an intelligent and thought provoking statement. I'd suggest you re-read the original post before YOU start pulling the thou is holier than me stuff...JMO of course. ;^)

Ya know that's bull...I've never pulled "holier than thou" on anyone. I've voiced my opinions and been shot down for them before. I wasn't just talking about this thread...I'm talking about any thread where someone opinion gets shot down. SO here again...I am wrong in how I think.

And I haven't called people names and told them that their opinions are wrong and called them out like some one this site has. And the some that has have been SC members! I don't make fun or insult any other photographer.

I'm not going home until you figure out how to get a sunset and the northern lights in the same picture with all that other stuff. Basic editing, please.
