I am not sure I can tell you what makes a good border ot not. I think its just an individual photo matter. You just have to play around.
One tip I can give you though, is that if you use photoshop, and increase canvas size to make your border. Always use even numbers of pixles, otherwise the border will be out a pixle. Like if you do a border of 5 pixles, it places 2 on one side and three on the other.
I think that can be important, because I have seen good photos where the border was uneven, and possible took away from the shot.

I guess a border wont make a shot but it can break a shot.. I think that is what I meant!!
I guess I need to learn a bit more about why some wide borders look good on some shots and not on others, and same for thin ones!!
Its back to the drawing board, it seems for some trial and error :) |

| first, I will say that a border shouldn't make or break the shot. It can improve a good photo, or ruin a good one, but it rarely improves a bad photo. If you try to get fancy with your borders, its gonna be a hit or miss thing in general, because you have a wide market of people on here to cater to. I'm a graphic designer and I do a lot of layout work so I try to do some interesting things with borders on occasion, but only when the picture really warrants it. Check out my submission to the off-center challenge for example. It's called Me and My Monopod. I got comments that the border was great and that it was bad. You never really know. My advice is to keep it simple. A nice 15 pixel or so white border with an optional black line looks nice. If you're really getting into this sort of thing for work you want to look at the publication it's going into and the target market, etc. On dpc, it's very wide so it's best to play it safe. |

I am no art student, so borders are a hit or miss thing with me.
How do you decide what 'works' when it comes to a border (contrasting color, white, black, thick, thin).....
I would love to hear some of your thoughts, as I think a border can make or break a shot sometimes!
