I've only just stumbled upon this thread, but I have to say that the fisheye shots really seem to work best. Good work.

I realise that it's after your photoshoot, but I would have said what Coolhar did.

Quick message to THANK everyone who gave me the advice I asked for concerning my son's band photo shoot! My daughter actually did most of the clicking this time but together we took what you all said very seriously and applied every bit of the suggestions given by the members. The shoot came out great and the band was happy with it. I have not posted most of the shots due to lack time this morning but I will post more on my profile at a later time. I would appreciate further guidance and critique from you all for what we currently have posted. I am a full fledged amature and you will NOT hurt my feelings with any critisism or suggestions! This is what I need to learn so that the next photo shoot can be even better.

Thanx!
Deb :-)

If you could get some dates of gigs this could be a fun GTG for the bay area/NorCal folk if the band was willing. Get a bunch of shooters and you get a bunch of different looks you could choose from. Most bands run the first few songs with flash and the rest with available light but it would be a fun GTG IMHO.

You guys are great! You've all made sense and I appreciate your input. Thank you! Keep it coming! I am watching this thread like a hawk!

They are putting their faith in me and I don't want to let them down.

Thanx,

If they don't know what they want and you're asking us for suggestions -- here's mine. Don't plan the shoot so much. Just go and hang out with them and let it flow. Ask them questions about the band and what they want to do with it's music as you are shooting. Let them lead your direction with maybe just a very small dose of guidance from you. Try to let them bring forward their own feelings about their band, and the image they want to project for it with photographs, instead of conforming to preconceived ideas or music industry stereotypes.

Generally from my experience with rock bands is you want wild, not professional. Shoot the wierd angles, get in too close with the camera at wide angle. If it's a no-no for "portraits" do it. Don't be afraid to do a shot, alternative bands and fans tend to like things in the rough.

Sounds cool like the Offspring or the likes...

You want to do some Joey Lawernce type stuff like he has in Joey's Ashley Gallery See the two in the Alley way, try some perspective stuff like that. Try some in Black and White and don't be afraid of noise. These guys are rockers not in the bubble gum top 40 sense so go dark.

Find some weird place to set it up... got a place with graffiti thats always adds a kewl feel... Skate Parks are great for this kind of thing.

Also here's Blink 182's Promo Photos

Pose 'em but don't put them in any "nice guy" pose I'm sure they don't want or need that... No flat clean up snaps... give em some depth.

Andy

BTW: Use your fisheye for a bunch on this one...

Clarification... The live TV sample is them as well as the studio work on the top player. (my son is the drummer... proud mom :-))

i'd say get some posed shots w/out there instruments and then some shots with them playing. don't get too artsy but dont be scared to think a bit outside the box (fake corporate loves that crap).

LOL Actually, my husband has the "Elvis" relation, although very distant :-) As far as the band goes, they are a pretty big rock/alternative band here in Sacramento. Web site is Nuclearband.com They have a slight mistake on that site... a snippet from a live television show from Vacaville CA starts about the same time as a studio sample of their music. You'll have to turn off one or the other on the built in player to hear a sample of their songs. Please let me know what you would all think of a good photo shoot. As far as flash, I have the SB 800 only.

I've got to ask...

... any relation to the King....Elvis?

Sorry not trying to highjack, just curious, and drunk.

Unless you have flash equipment, outdoors might be a better choice.

What kind of music do they play, or what kind of image do they want to portray? Country band in a reund own urban setting would not be quite right, but then a heavy metal band in a cow pasture or with farm machinery isn't right either.

early morning or late afternoon (morning i think is easier) to get some sidelighting.

Here is one i took today - if you have a scenic overlook that is usually a good BG. This shows teh sidelighting on his face - a reflector would have helped a great deal, or even fill flash, but i was out trying to a landscape entry and he wanted his picture taken, so it is a well composed snapshot shall we say.

Hopefully you can do better than this group shot - heads should be at different levels, they should have their musical instruments or other appropriate props.

Do you have any information on what the band is like?

What kind of music do they play? How many members? Can you post a snippet of lyrics from one of their songs so we can get an idea of style?

I had a bunch of ideas, but nothing really fits a band I know nothing about, so nothing is really appropriate.

Great idea! Thanx! Any other suggestions out there as well? I am open to all of your collective wisdom! :-)

I've never done this kind of work however:

Since you don't have much time to get too creative on your own, I would check some current "CD Sleeves" of rock bands and see what the shots look like inside. I would use those as a sort of setup for your shots.

More promotional shots. They've been doing a lot of touring lately and need some good stuff for press packs

Are they looking for an album cover type shot?
