Since I just confused anyone to even set eyes on this post, maybe someone super-educated can answer all our questions.

This is getting more confusing with each post.

gr8dane, are their any visible differences between the kit lens you received with your 300D and the one you received with your 20D? Does the 20D example carry a "II" marking on it? Or a "USM" marking? The dpreview.com review seems to imply that the change came with the 350D, and not with the 20D.

AFAIK the version of the 18-55 that ships with the rebel xt does NOT have usm. you might want to look on page 20 of the rebel xt review over at dpreview. they did find some differences between the two lenses and it seems like the new one is worse.

I was not aware of a I or II designation for this lens, only the non-USM and the USM. I don't see that at either B&H or on the Canon website. Where are you finding it labelled as II ?

Don't think so. I read that the only difference is the USM, or UltraSonic Motor. Should make focusing faster and quieter. But I never thought mine was particularly slow or loud. However, it can now be sold ($140 at B&H) separately while the non-USM 18-55 was only available as part of a camera kit.
