There's something to be said for being tactful and courteous when making a constructive criticism. Where I work we are not allowed to project a negative image, but we may offer a comment that suggests a way to make something better or to improve it. I also do not hide my identify and I personally don't care if someone hides theirs or not (most of my anonymous comments are very nice ones).

I do get my share of purely negative comments made by people who are either very naive or just don't think about the image they project and how they will make the receiver feel. I just shake my head, roll my eyes and get over it. There's something else to be said for learning language skills. As much as students balk that they will never use what they learn in a writing class, this website alone, proves them wrong!

Whew! Just finished voting on the challenge and it's time to go to work. Once the challenge is over, I wouldn't mind getting some constructive criticism on my photo. I'm a newbie and would really appreciate ideas on how to better improve...I can only read sooo many books for ideas. I thought for the majority of the pics in the delicate challenge, kudos!

Have a great day everyone!

i think its a real shame...there's few enough comments as it is without people reading threads like this and being scared to leave comments. After making a real effort to leave thoughtful comments on photos in the last challenge i voted on, i'm disillusioned to enter a challenge again (delicate) and have it lurking around 4.7 without any comments that'll help me improve. Course the week's just beginning, but i'm pretty sure the situation won't change much during the week, from past experience.

I don't mind hidden comments - it's kind of fun to try and guess who it might be...then find out when the challenge is finished. ;^)

I give and receive alot of comments and prefer to remain out in the open. I don't mind people sending me PM's after I've made a comment, even during the challenge. But that's just me. Sometimes I'd like to see who left a certain comment right then, but I'm not known for my patience. By the time the challenge is over, I read any new comments and am already onto the next one. I guess no big deal either way. It's the comment that should count, not who gave it to you.

I do it so I don't get bugged about my comments. It's better that way for the person who would PM me. 'cuz if I received a PM I would have to rip them apart. I'm usually pretty nice and constructive about the photos I comment on. When I should be leaving "WTF are you thinking?" under most of them just based on the entry not meeting the challenge.

As one of the few "pigtails" replying to this thread, I have to say You're Right! I don't have BALLS!

I do, however, have a great deal of self-esteem. I stand by my comments, good and bad. I'm not a "little kid" nor am I "just messing around."

As mentioned by others here, I became a baghead to:
1. Stop people PM'ing during the challenge to "explain" their photos.
2. To allow people to take the comment at face value and not based on my perceived "credentials" (or perceived lack of).
3. Because I don't owe anyone a comment.
and 4. If my comment dings a contributor's fragile ego, other comments and the end of the challenge will likely cool the person off before they hit the reply button.

I don't see what the problem is with being a "bag head".
Just wait a few days and you can see who left the comment.
What's wrong with that?
Total anonymity could be seen as "cowardly", but it's not.

Maybe I just dont want to be contacted by kids while the voting is still on.

There is an option to wear a bag during voting, and it is anyone's right to use it.

Yeah - I cannot see why people don't leave comments. It's pretty rare to see a witch hunt about comments people don't like.

The bag comes off at the end anyway (unless they remove the comments before the end I guess), so what does it matter.

Now ducking for the obvious responses..... :-)

Pretty much why I chose to be hidden during voting. I want my impression/feelings/opinion about a photo to be unbiased. If I know who the photographer is, even after I have voted on the shot, then there is the chance for influence. I prefer to retain the integrity of my opinion and to do that, I am a bag head. Doesn't mean you will agree with my opinion, but at least the only thing influencing it is the photograph.

It's supposed to all be anonymous, and it can get annoying when someone ruins that with a pm about a comment during the challenge. Everything's revealed when the challenge is over, so it's really not like their hiding for long.

I have to say that in the last challenges. I have gotten lower scores with no comments at all. They are some of my better photos too. I don't like that scoring is so low and they don't say why the pictures are worth a low score.

" do not have the BALLS to be responsible for their comments."

That is the insult you threw out as a generalization. And apparently you cannot read or are just looking for an argument. I said in my post I was a bag head and you even quoted, or attempted to, that portion of my post. Also, I didn't say I was insulted, just that you threw out the insult as a generalization.

up in the air on how I feel about this. I think it's good for a cool off period. I have never flammed or been flammed about my comments.

Oh I am hidden and I have balls. Please don't think we are doing it for that just wanting to avoid pm's

I'm a 'baghead'. I'm not trying to hide or to escape responsibility for my comments. You're right, the identity is revieled after voting is over (good), but the difference is that until then the one who may have received a comment that seemed unhelpful or even rude had time to 'calm down', maybe read the comment in a new light, compare it to others.
That's also the reason why I hide other commentors' identity during voting. I consider the comments for what they're worth, and not in function of whether or not I know/like/dislike the commentor.

I am not ashamed of any comment that I leave and take full responsibility for all of them, but I am still a bag head. It has nothing to do with the insult you just threw out as a generalization.text

Huh?? What insult? Anyway, you sort of proved my point. There is no insult intended. If you felt this way, maybe YOU are hiding your comments during voting???

I have been watching this site nearly on a daily basis since I first joined in April 2005. At first it was mainly to look at photos and learn techniques, but once hooked, I started reading comments. The majority of them were good criticism of the photos, but I remember one particular comment on a photo I liked (and ended up getting a ribbon)in which someone had said (and I'm paraphrasing), I've seen this same photo taken a million times and this is totally uncreative...Anyway, I thought the comment was uncalled for and I was offended for the photographer.

As a newbie, I want people to leave comments (both as encouragement AND for improvement), but I think we need to remember that when leaving criticism, keep in mind to be considerate and constructive. :)

Anyway, good morning everybody! :)

But by that time most people have cooled off from being upset over a single comment and don't PM.

I think some of the views expressed in this short thread are more disturbing than someone having a desire to remain anonomous during the voting.

I am not ashamed of any comment that I leave and take full responsibility for all of them, but I am still a bag head. It has nothing to do with the insult you just threw out as a generalization.
10/26/2005 10:13:45 AM · #24
I am not out for revenge or anything....do appreciate any type of criticism, it is just that if you are going to make a comment which is negative you should be able to represent why you feel that way and maybe explain a little more to the photographer. Hiding to me anyway seems like they want to avoid confrontation and feel smug in knowing they can not be gotten to until after the voting is over. If someone was going to PM them to death, they could do it after the voting anyway..right?
10/26/2005 10:06:17 AM · #25
Sure does seem to be a lot of those around lately. Not to mention I've seen the votes drop significantly in the past few months in open challenges.

People like the bag so they don't get PM'ed to death if they leave a "less than nice comment." I personally do not use the bag as I'm on your same train of thought. I'll own up to any comment I make right then and there. If I say something that offends I don't mind if someone PM's me to call me to the carpet on it. If I'm in the wrong I own up and apologize if not then so be it.

Whew! Got me going there.
