The most effective way is to bounce the flash in the ceiling. Some flashes like my sb800 have incorporated a white card that will pop up the top of the flash in order to get some direct light to the subject and the rest bouced in the ceiling. But the hard part is to understand the right angle to bounce it acordingly to your distance to the subject, the ceiling distance, the distance of the background to the subject and so on. Trial and error is essential to learn here.
It the ceiling is too high (like some big churches) or it isn't reflective enough you might not acomplish the bouncing effect.

| Check the user manual for your speedlite and see if you can turn it down a touch for certain circumstances... |

I use a Lumiquest Softbox to diffuse my flashlight. I am quite pleased with it and it definitely works. They also have things to bounce the light so there are plenty of options.

A diffuser is definitely a good start... and getting a flash bracket to move the flash higher above the camera will help, too.
...and, when possible, learn to bounce the flash off the ceiling.

| I just got a speedlite 420 for my canon digital rebel xt. I was at a friends wedding and my pictures turned out to my satisfaction but the flash was so bright that it left shadows on the back wall of the bride and groom etc. How do I minimize these shadows? Maybe a diffuser over my flash? Please help. |
