well since yesterday the cellular network here in Houston has been maxed out. It takes a long time to get ahold of anyone , land line or wireless.

But here is the kicker.... Time Warner Cable has shut my cable services off. I have phone, internet and cable TV from TWC. But it is working just fine and dandy at my sister inlaws house just 4 miles away from us.

My wife called and heard 3 different stories, but the first one she heard was that they shut the network down in Houston (no they didnt its working at my inlaws house just 4 miles away. The person that told her this is in Canada, but anyway, she also mentioned that TWC had to let their people evacute houston so they had to shut the system down.

I work for Cingular Wireless and feel this is a very bogus line. The wireless network does work just fine with out human tech haveing to look at the equipment. after 5 PM our switches are remotely monitored out of the dallas RNOC or Chicago. if they cant fix the problem, out call a tech to go fix it.

TWC is # 1 on my list and its not the good list.

by the way, Im using my the cellular GPRS service to access DPC

I got my house all boarded up and plants put away. My wife and my mother in law moved a lot of things while i did other task.

I live just a few miles north of I-10 so I rode my bike down there to check it out. and it was a mess. I have some pics I will post later.

My parrents went to my sisters house this morning (thursday) at 4:30 am so they all could drive to FT. Worth. once they all got loaded up into 2 vehicles They got about 10 miles away from my sisters house, if that, and gave up and they all went back to my sisters house. They left my sisters house at 6:30 am and gave up at 11:30. 5 hours to drive less than 10 miles.

The problem with these hurricanes is that they spin in such way to carry most of the rain to the right of them (to the east of them). The coastal region will suffer from tidal waves on both sides of the eye, but the major flooding will happen to the east of the eye because of all the moisture that drags from the gulf on that side.

That said, Corpus may have it easy this time, but poor Louisiana will get hit again, and even harder than by Katrina because Katrina went to the east from NO.

Gosh, I wish everyone could make it out on time to the safe place.

Hey yall, Im actually in Central Texas (near Austin/Waco)(275 miles north of Galveston) and we are already running out of gas and supplies, and businesses and school are already planning to close! I've never been through a hurricane, but I guess we will see!! I just wonder if I need to bring the motorcycle into the house.....

i have a friend who works for Halliburton in Lafayette, LA and they are evacuating tonight. he said that Halliburton has their own meteorologists and they are predicting a strike near Lafayette.

everyone who lives in S. Louisiana should keep a close watch.

my prayers are with everyone in Rita's path.

I've also moved rgo's original post on religion to the same thread. Again, let's keep all religious/political discussion in rant. Thanks guys!

I've hidden another political post related to the pending hurricane and moved that post to this thread here.

Last reminder- political discussions belong in Rant.

I would be feeling nervous too. You never really know the damage a cat. 5 can do. (I certainly have never experienced one). I don't think I would take the risk of being anywhere near. Stay Safe Riggs.

Need to have a run of 6 years worth of names; and then if one of them does severe damage it is dropped from the rotation.

I live just west of Riggs (actually in Katy) and plan on sticking it out, but we are nervous.

What about Xanthe,Yvonne, Yolande and Zara??

Can someone out there let us know what the situation is of this minute? Are people being mandatorily being evacuated and when is the probable landhit?
I have experienced being on the edge of one of these in the Caribbean and it is not good!

Best wishes to everyone in the area - stay safe!

I just hope if you all have the chance to leave south texas please do.
Once the storm hits there is no changing your mind.
Our prayers and best wishes go out to all in south texas.

Someone posted a note in another forum and said it is suppose to be a category 1 hurricane all the way to Dallas. I have not heard this personally.

I know it won't be hit as bad as the coastal areas, but probably no fun at sea world :( anyway, if we don't go, that is $160 down the drain.

i noticed that expedia is offering flexible options for people who were impacted by katrina. it's quite possible that hotwire would be doing something similar for this.

and, yes, check with your credit card. they often give you traveler's protection that you didn't even know you had.

yowzah --

i used to live in clute, near lake jackson. it looks like it's almost ground zero for rita. eep!

there was one named hurricane danny when i lived there in the 80s. it didn't do a ton of damage, but i remember houston was pretty flooded.

good luck to everyone in the path of this monster. if you're reading this, you'd better have already evacuated. :P

useless trivia time: if we end up having more than 23 named storms this year (the names only go up through "W"), storms after that will be named by the letters of the greek alphabet. hurricane gamma anyone?

This storm is at 897 mb. Katrina only went down to 902 at her worst. Expect a very large surge with this storm even if it later diminishes before landfall. This extreme low presure over the Gulf raises the water under the storm, When this water, which can be from 6" to several feet above normal sea level, aproaches the shallows near the coast it will be a wall of water over ten feet high and several miles long. Perhaps over 20 feet.

You all be careful down there. Anyone staying get to high ground.

Here is a great tip my father gave me tonight.

If you have an old phone, one that does not use electricity...get it out. It may be the only way to call out.

Be safe James.

THings are definatelly crazy here in Houston. Lesson learned, if you are out getting supplies and you see something you might need, but not really sure if you shoud get it. GET IT anyway, dont use it and keep your receipt. I saw a cat carrier at Academy and did not get it, then the wife said we need 1 more, I went to the pet store and they were all out. So I went back to academy and they were gone. I did get a larger pet carrier, but the smaller one would have worked out best.

I did get some ply wood to board up my windows, a delivery truck just dropped off a new shipment and we waited in line for about 20 minutes, but we got some. Home Depot really had a great system down. they had 5 stacks of ply wood and 2 guys at each stack, they would let 5 people back and load up your car with however much you wanted and you went up front to pay. So Kudos to them for making it smooth.

I just got finished video taping the contents of the the inside of my house and all the walls, floors, celings, appliances and everything I could point my camera at. I need to video the out side tomorrow.

Those in the Hurricane path need to find a DPC buddy away from the path and give them your contact info (home and cell #'s) and ask them to call you if you dont PM them to let them know you are ok. and get their numbers so you can try to call them to let them know you are ok if you net connection is down. I have contacted my DPC Buddy (Robin Holden).
