kawhona had a suggestion I was about to make: Start in Scranton and drive North on 81 until you start to see the colors change. Route 11 parallels 81--so you can get off and continue your northern trek through quaint towns and countryside....all the way to Canada if I recall correctly.

If you decide to do that, then send me a PM--I'm on the route.
(And I'm a lot nicer in person than in the forums, too. =) )

Color change isn't an exact science and depends on lots of factors. In PA (just moved from there was in the Scranton area for 8 years) the change is about 2 weeks but, once a big wind comes thru that can dramatically change it. On the east side of the state virtually everywhere ... Around Mifflinburg you get a nice combination of color change and Amish scenes. Further east you have lots of state parks, all the way to the Delaware Water Gap which has not only color change but, the river. Outside of Scranton there is a nice little private community called Eagle Rock the advantages here are it isn't crowded and the hotel costs for leaf peepers isn't quite as severe. Anywhere along the Poconos .. Mt. Pocono etc. you will see big spikes in hotel costs ... not as bad as Maine and NE but, still significant. You can drive up 81N towards NY State pick any little state road and you will find lots of good shooting. Season isn't long but, this is a pretty inexpensive way to get practise. Don't forget your Enhancing filter.

I live in PA, but am moving out of here at the end of september. Do you have any information as to where in Pa can I chcek out the fall colors during late september?

Ohhh just a small suggestion for plotting your trip out...

Google Earth

It is such an insanely amazing program.

Tell me what you're running and I'll convert it. I can make it into any sort of word document you like--or, perhaps, you'd like a PDF (Adobe Acrobat)? The Excel file allows you to sort columns, but if you can't see it it's pretty useless. =)

I do have adobe acrobat.

Strange thing is..I downloaded that program that Di link me to and it still didn't work. hrmm..
Thanks (hug)

Any where there's trees!!! Probably not southwest Kansas! You can look for miles and see 2 or 3 trees and that's it.

See the post eqsite made on the other board. I was just about to post some of those same links. Taughannock Falls is the highest single drop falls in the US - yes, higher than Niagara, just not as big.

My alma matter has a very popular annual Autumn Leaf Festival. I'm sure I'll be up there again this year if anyone wants to tag along! :)

It is also beautiful on the Parkway in and around Linville, NC and Grandfather Mountain. We get a load of lookers up here but I've heard the fall leaves up north are truely beautiful.

Yes, come join us in New Hampshire/Vermont. You wont be alone. We regularly have tourbuses in town during peak foliage. It's really quite impressive (both the leaves and the insane amount of tourists who come for leaves).

This one is about an hour from Syracuse. It's the tallest single-stage waterfall in the US east of the Mississippi. PM me if you want directions. There are quite a lot of other great falls nearby in the Ithaca and Watkins Glen area as well.

Being a great fan of fall season I have tried to explore different areas famous for their fall colors. Vermont , NH, New England, Upper pennisula MI, Colorado, Smokey mountains and above all a road trip on Blue ridge highway was something magical all in all.

However, I must admit Canadian fall colors were simply breath taking and I still long for another mesmerizing trip.

How come dahkota's suggestion of "Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah Valley" was overlooked for this list? It's famous for fall foliage views.

Or you can avoid the crowds of tourists by going a ridge or two farther west into wild, wonderful West Virginia.

There's a reason why the people who live there call it God's Country. It's beautiful in the fall, and relatively undeveloped.

I have heard that the Ozarks in Missouri are absolutely stunning mid October.

I can vouch for middle Wisconsin. Last autumn the foliage was drop dead gorgeous. I would've loved to have seen the colors further up north.

Indeed!

The upper peninsula of Michigan is 16,452 square miles (42,610 km), almost one-third of the land area of the state and about the size of Denmark! But only 328,000 people -- 3% of the state's population -- live there! So it is definitely nice and rural, with vast expanses of nature at its finest.

(But there are 3 state universities up there!)

Ah come on... =] there are several to choose from! Maybe not with direct service from lots of airports, but still... CMX, ESC, IMT, CIU and SAW.

Another option would be to fly into a larger airport in the lower peninsula, then rent a car and drive to the UP. That way you can experience driving across the 5-mile long Mackinac Bridge that connects the two peninsulas...

Michigan... Upper or lower. With all the lakes and trees we have it's just amazing.

My wife and I (prozac) live in Albany, so I'm sure we'll be around.

:)

If I fly in to Albany, NY. he could take me around the areas to see everyone and take pictures of all the areas. All I would need to do is get some locations from you guys and maybe go for a day to take pictures or meet up somewhere.

I am planning on staying about a week.

Greetings,
[quote=pitsaman] Vermont and NH are very cute in Fall, foliage is awesome.
Only problem there are no places to stay and lack of Public lands.

HUH??? Since when, we have this little thingy here called a national forest, which along with open timber company lands, and state lands makes up like 80% of the land in the White Mountains area... As for places to stay, tons of B & B's and hotel/motels etc, although reservations are always a good thing, but who the heck would go any distance on a trip without reservations????
Mike

Most of the cute scenery is on private land and difficult to get access to it.Hotels are in very small numbers .You have to drive to a big towns to find one and they are 100% booked in October. I end up sleeping two nights in my car last year because everything was full in 200 mile stretch of Vermont.

Michigan was on my list, as good as anywhere except not known about as well. Maybe I'm anti-social. I have a friend from Michigan that says the upper part is the place to go. The problem comes in getting there. If I had enough time to spend that is where I would go. Build an airport up there or something.
