Good luck man, boot camp is a lot of mental crap to make you think as one group not one person. The hardest part will probably be the DPC withdraws, lol maybe your mom can keep you updated.

Good luck. (oh and just a heads up for one of their favorite pranks, if someday someone tells you they forgot the keys for the HMMWV (hummer) and sends you in to get them, tell them to shove it and just get in. They used to play this all the time at our motor pool and make the newbies run all over looking for the non-existant keys lol.)

lol good advice

I spent 12 years in the Navy, absolutely no regrets. I don't care to be shot at, so I would not go in the Army or Marines. Wherever you go, research it first. Know what is available and get it in your enlistment contract that it is what you will be doing. I went in the Navy at 18, right after high school and had the Nuclear field written into my enlistment. I was a Electronics Technician and Reactor Operator. I went to boot camp with a college graduate who had a degree in Electrical Engineering. They made him a Machinists Mate. Boy was he ever mad about that.
If you have a preference, learn about what is available and do do business with a handshake or a promise. Get it in writing...

Good luck no matter where you end up.
JD Anderson

EDIT: I just saw your latest post that you have made your decision. Good luck and God Bless!

Good luck to you. I am prior service Air Force and just wanted you to know that during Basic Training, write letters to everyone you know, sleep when you can and keep in mind that this too shall pass and is only for a short period of time (12 weeks) and you can doing anything as long as it is short term. You will survive it, and go on to have fun. You will make lots of friends who will be there for you.

Have you looked at the USMC photo archives?

Here's the Dept. of Defense Photos:

If you click on the link for Other image sources, you can go branch by branch to see them. I've downloaded several of the Air Force ones, that will make great posters. They are all public domain, so feel free to use them.

Here's one of my favorites from there:

You will never regret your decision. You may think you made a mistake once a DI gets in your face for the first time, but it'll get better after that.

If you need anything let me know. If you want, shoot me a PM with your mailing address. I want to send you something as a... well, welcome aboard gift...

LOL, I was in the Air Force from 92-96 and my uniform was changed three times during those four years. Good thing I hardly ever wore the thing.

Another thing....It's all good to have it in writing, but don't just read it in the office, ask to take it home to look over. That will give you a pressure free environment to look at it. If you sit in their office you'll feel pressured to read it quickly.

LOL! Can't argue with you there. Bling Bling! The Navy "dungarees" I think have been phased out. When I was in, you were not allowed to wear them off the base because the mucky-mucks were embarassed by them or something. I think it was triggered by some mechanical types who would be out in town in dirty, greasy uniforms. Us "twidgets" as the electronics types were called, always had them clean and pressed.
;)

oh my you have no idea. Yes the dungarees in that pictures is gone and now we wear much nicer (in some eyes) ones that remind me of the uniforms they wear at JiffyLube (as seen here //www.seafarer.com/products.htm ). And you should see the new uniforms in plan instead of the working whites and blues...they are kakhi top like the chief and black pants. Looks like crap! And BDU's instead of dungarees ( //usmilitary.about.com/od/navy/a/newuniforms.htm and here //www.strategypage.com/messageboards/messages/480-470.asp ) Hoping they won't start that till I retire in 4 years. This would make it my second uniform change.

If we are being BS'd it will be made known prior to any enlistment. Not sure how a recruiter could hope to think we are that desperate or that dumb as to not know what we are getting into. If he wants to waste the militarys money by having Corys physical and paperwork done, then suddenly say that job is not available, that would be real stupid and irresponsible on his part no?

There is such a thing as Fate and God orchestrating things for the good of those that serve him. And this is where our hope is, although we will still be making sure he gets what he wants, or he will be attending fall college session. :)

I am with you. If it is meant to be, it will happen.

An idea...if the Navy recruiter Vince is working for you well. See if you can have him call the Marine division and confirm the "open PH" job...

All I did was look up the navy detailer for that rate ( the person that cuts everyone's orders) and called and emailed her. I know that the Marine equivalent is called a Monitor but I am not sure how to contact them. The Senior Chief I spoke to said they were merging rates with Lithographer, Draftsman, Journalist, and Photographer in fiscal 06 to a rate called MC Mass Communications specialist. she said that it was difficult to get a school seat coming in and the were probably not adding anymore to the pipeline now until the merge is complete. This article describes this.Enlisted rates merge
If someone gave me the number, I would call

I was always envious of the marines, they looked sharp and made me proud to be in the service in general. You will never hear me put a marine down for anything...or any other branch either but the Marines are sharp.

I said if the job is gauranteed and remains that way thru the enlistment process, that is what we want. If there are any suprises or changes we wont be enlisting.

We shall see. I will keep you guys posted.

To be honest Kel, something like that sounds like BS to me, what kind of test is he talking about? I am all for being a Marine if thats what he wants but it just seems rather coincidental that with recruitment down, he walks in and they have a "one a year" slot open for him.
Remember from my PMs what the detailer said, that they were cutting back and merging rates due to cuts. They may be funnelng dollars to the war effort but generally when the navy makes cuts, the marines make cuts.
