I don't know all the tech terms in photography, but I still attempt some sort of comment.
A bad photo must have some merit, otherwise why bother submitting? I would appreciate comments, polite ones. Negative comments help me improve, positive comments encourage. Try doing both.
As for voting methods, JM, I applaud your diligent efforts, WAY TO GO. I will try to live up to your shining example. Currently, I do less, but try to offer my "thought" process as to WHY I voted the way I did.
Thanks all for sharing, esp. those that think about their vote.

I noticed this as well. Patella gives excellent comments, and quite obviously gives the photos quite a bit more than just enough time for them to finish loading before moving on to the next photo.

I've got a mediocre picture in the current challenge and out of over 50 people I've only got 2 short comments so far.

I know I don't always comment either, but I'll make more of an effort, because the constructive and usable feedback is what makes our photos better.

I try and judge each photo on its own merits ... my first job is to see how well it met the challenge. Then I look at the quality of the photo. I try and keep in mind that most people on here are not using a Canon D30(including myself). I consider an average photo, that meets the qualifications of the challenge, to get a 5-6 vote.
I normally only have one 10 vote and that is the one I feel was of the highest quality and meets the challenge in the most unique way. Conversely, I rarely have given a 1 vote. Things have to be pretty bad for me to give a 1. The majority of my votes tend to be above 5.
I try and offer suggestions, when I can, and help someone with the limited knowledge I have. I don't really look at things as a photo contest until after the challenge has been met. But by meeting the challenge, you are already at a vote of 5.

Yes. Not that funk, though; a different one.

I'm doing both...

This is a good point... I was guilty of judging a contest on my vote but I have that problem worked out now... I'm judging the challenge and how well or poorly it was met... My vote average should go up now..

What would I get for a picture of a Scottish Flag ? It has a large white cross on it...

I suggest we have a 'Crosses and Flags' competition to mitigate the bias induced by anarchos's habitual voting patterns. :)

Are you looking at the pictures at all? The title even mentions the word "pubic". Oops, the word was Pubert. But it still should be very obvious to anyone voting.

so wait, let me get this straight: is a beginner more likely to be better at the technical aspects of photography, or at choosing an original subject?

Well, I just wonder who could have submitted that!!!
it certainly is original with a 'finger up' to the 'norm'

Mousie, you bring up a very good point and one that ALL of us need to remember...and that is there are many different levels of photographers on this site. Some are just beginning to learn and there are others that have obviously been photographing subjects for many years.

A beginner is not going to see things the same way that a more experienced photographer will. So in my mind a beginner may take more of the so called "unoriginal" shots. Maybe more of the flags, flowers or crosses. We can't continually count those down just because we have seen them a lot.

Sometimes it is easier to learn on a much used subject. I love taking pictures of flowers, because I like looking at pictures of flowers. I compare my photos to those of others and see how I can make mine look better. A beginner needs to learn the composition and lighting aspects of photography before they can start to learn the "creative" aspects. To me it is a LOT easier to learn with a subject that is more well known, (some may call that "unoriginal"), but I would hope that everyone would judge the photo on it's technical merits not just the subject matter.

The nature of the challenge is to suggest the subject matter so it is reasonably conceivable that many will submit 'the same boring ass subject matter' because they have not got your originality, vision, love of Country, respect for religous views.....

I agree that this site isn't entirely about originality. It's about taking good pictures. An original subject is... nice... but is it necessary for a good photo? No. If someone takes a spectacular picture of a cross or a flag, I'll rate it accordingly. It's just so much harder to do that since flags and crosses are major icons in our visual language and we've all seen a million of them.

First, I think there is quite a bit of originality on the site.

But second, I don't think originality is all it's cracked up to be. It's hard to imagine people so closed minded that they won't even give a picture a chance simply because they think it's unoriginal.

Granted, when someone chooses a trite subject, they're not going to get a high vote from me unless they pull it off really well. I do actually look at the photo and think about it, though, rather than mindlessly giving a 1 or 2.

I tend to agree with your voting method. I too was not too crazy about the pubic hair photo. However, after going back and taking a look at the photo I decided to raise my vote a couple of points because it was original and fit in with the theme of the challenge. I also thought that nudes would be an unoriginal concept for the challenge but found myself giving higher scores to them due to how well the photos were portrayed. I am trying to open up to other's ideas. Only then can I begin to grow and develop any photographic abilities I may have. Granted, my abilities are quite limited at this point but we all have to start somewhere.
