I'm all giddy, a couple of favourites and my personal best score yet. It's also looking like I'm finally going to get the high score for my camera too, which is nice as I seem to be the only one who has it, except for someone who lives by Haystack Rock....

I have just finished voting and I have to agree with rblanton and nico blue, of course I always enjoy going through the challenges, but I've really gotten my rocks off on this one! I really like use of leading lines in a composition anyway, and I think there are a lot of awesome examples in the field. Sure, there are as always some poor shots present, but I've even enjoyed them :-) I also have chosen some new favorites. I wish there were more entries so I could keep going :-( Guess I'll just have to go back through and start bumpin' all my scores up :-P

just finished voting on the challenge... I think this was one of the better challenges i've voted on in a while, went on a favourite adding spree at one point, so many amazing, amazing shots :-)
I am really happy with my score as well, dont think im going to ribbon with all those other amazing shots but hopefully I'll end up in the top 10 -

| I really enjoyed voting on this challenge. I especially enjoyed the more subtle images that once I took the time, was captivated by the use of lines. I am sure many "drive by" voters missed them as some have made comments that few if any met the challenge. Good show to those participating and especially to the subtle crew. |

One fave...now we're talkin. Scores creeping up but I don't expect it to have any legs. It's a pretty good good score for what I consider or intended to be an artsy image.

I think you should sit a few out, rest up for a few weeks, then have another go.

wow! i've been gone for the past few days with no internet connection and had been dying to find out how my scores turned out. I am SURPRISED to say the least! This is my second challenge and I was just hoping for a better score from my last one. The last challenge I entered was last minute and I just had to make it look "fantasy-like". I think my image this time is better.
i'm now addicted to these challenges! too bad i don't have a macro lens. any suggestions on which lens to get for a decent price?
i'm now thinking circles... dreaming circles.... hmmmm |

I'm happy with my shot and thrilled with the Favorite I've gotten, so the score's not that important... LOL (I just hope it manages to eke its way over the 5.0 mark again!)

I have to admit that I am one who misunderstood this challenge as well. However, from comments I've received, it seems as if it all depends on the viewer. My image isn't the best compared to other entries but there is a relative sense of simplicity in my composition that seems to evoke an emotion from those who have viewed it.
Am I addicted to the update button? Of course but what I look out for is the number of comments I receive from people. If they make comments either good or bad, it's still a knee jerk reaction to my image. If I evoke an emotion, I am satisfied because I know my image has touched them in one way or another.
"Amazing light...love the starkness and abstractness of the image...simple, subtle, beautiful".
Enough ranting here. I have 9 comments. Keep them coming.

You are making an assumption here. And I believe you are wrong. There are tons of examples of photographers trying new things in every challenge. Maybe they aren't new and different to you as a photographer, but that doesn't mean its not new and different to the photographer.

you have joined a site where other people let you know how much they like or don't like your work. You many try to appeal to a select few who 'get you' and ignore the rest and NOT complain about your score from the general population, OR you can try to appeal to the broadest group possible, garnering lots of kudos OR you can do a little of both. In the process you should learn. Stating that its the voter's problem and not yours doesn't help you in the long run. As others have said, the voter's vote on what they like.
In anything you do, you need to learn the basics first. If you use noise or blur or any other technique, make sure you know why and how to do it well. If there is no purpose to it, most people will see it as using it to 'fix' a bad image. There are plenty of winning examples of what you all call out of the box shots, ones with grain or blur that don't follow the rules. But they were well done images. They spoke to people. A large group of people. Saying that 400 people don't know what they like or what art is or what good photography is because they don't like/get/understand/appreciate you is ridiculous.

Many months ago, while reviewing photos for sale at a local market, I found one that I really liked. It is a photo that has a hand rail running into the photo along the left side , curving toward the middle and getting smaller and smaller. This rail also led to the main subject, which was a boy off in the distance. I immediatley recognized the photographers intent although I had no idea at the time that this was a technique known as leading lines.
I have to admit that, after searching for an entry for this challenge, I failed to produce a shot that I felt met the challenge.
I was looking to take a photo that dragged the viewer into the photo and led him/her to the main subject of the photo.
I myself, took several photos with lines...but that's not the challenge.
Photos with lines that lead to subjectless blurry areas don't cut it. Simply having lines without any depth to the photo doesn't cut it. Thinking outside the box is a good thing in alot of challenges but not when it is avoiding a compositional technique.
I recognized this technique before I knew this technique existed...now that I have an understanding of what it is, should I really have to stare at the photo and wonder if it is at all close to achieving this technique. I sorta think the photo should convince me by grabbing mt attention and showing me that it does! Unfortunatley, there are alot of photos that will recieve low marks from me due to the above mentioned reasons.

I'm at 5.38 but I thank the lord for this comment because it proves there is....well something that keeps me around. My entry is in this challenge for every quirky reason this commentor noted...warts and all and I hoped it would take hold for exactly what it was...risky bidniss for a DPC entry. This made my day. |

Nobody should kowtow anytime to the voters opinions. It's your photo, your point of view, not theirs.
I've looked over the archives to the winning photo's and I must say a lot of them don't appeal to me at all, too smooth, too obvious, too non-creative, too frightened to try something different.
Most of us are amateurs, enjoying capturing our moments. A lot of us are still in the learning process, be it technical wise or composition wise or post processing wise, but we get hammered because we don't produce the perfect quality image.

I still get confounded that anything not clear as a bell, sharp as a tack, and without grain/noise usually gets the Hammer anyway (Mine is in this area). But, that is the way of the voters, and I know it, just that I wanted to display my vision and not kowtow to it this time.

No score post - just commentary. I was very disappointed with the entries for this challenge. Seems people think that any, and I mean just any, slight representation of a line fits the challenge. Well, sorry. In my eyes there were a lot of shots that just were extreme cop outs and less than par shots. Mine may not be the best, but I think there were far more that did not meet the challenge than did in this one.
Edit: After three rounds with the images I am afraid that my average vote cast will be lowered. I wanted to see if I was way off base here so I asked two other people to view the images and offer an opinion. Both said the same thing - "What were these people thinking?"

Where does it say the lines must lead to a subject??? They must lead, yes, but they can lead you to a point unseen too in my opinion. Why do they have to stop at a subject.
As I see it, they can lead you to, can lead you from, can lead you over, as long as they let your eyes follow. |
What about if your entire image is the subject, what then, eh! Well either way i'm sucking impressively in this one :)
