noob question, does that TC work with my Panasonic FZ20?

My particular TC does not... it's a "back of lens" TC, which attaches between an SLR lens and the camera body. I know that many manufacturers make TCs that attach to the front of lenses via filter threads for use on point and shoot/non-detachable lens cameras.

Sorry to get off topic:

Peterish, is screws into a 52mm thread just as a filter would, so if you can use 52mm filters, yes you could.

nshapiro, I think it was worth while. 5mp, much better in low light, a little better zoom, much sharper images, worlds better macro capabiliy, less noise, better battery life (thanks to the SD card) and a few new bells and whistles. The only thing I don't like is the mount for the tripod is now plastic??? I also had to buy new memory and had to trade all my 52mm stuff and tubes in for 58mm.

Proceed with the teleconverter discussion and please PM me if you have any other off topic Qs.

I think I'll definitely be getting a 1.4 or 1.6 converter; which manufacturer did you buy your's from? And by the way what ISO and Aperture is that moon shot? its very sharp and noise-free.

I think it was f5.6, 1/40 shutter, iso 50 with the canon 1.6x made for the S1. I believe the S1 has a feature for night shots where it digitally replaces black with pure black inside the camera. Thus no noise. I thought I read that somewhere.

Edited to add that I forgot to say thanks.

A bit off topic (sorry), but do you think the S2 was a worthwhile upgrade from the S1? Anything you don't like in comparison, or all improvements? I am tempted, but after upgrading my 300D to a 350D, and the S2 being SD rather than compact flash, makes me wonder...

No I'm not...because there are times when I simply NEED a little bit more reach. In such a cased I would have to buy a 400-600mm lense. That'd be $1,500-$6,000. That's money I do not have. So for those time when I need the extra reach I can use a $279 lens extender sure I lose quality - that's a given. But I can also get shots I couldn't otherwise.

Yesterday, I shot a freighter (accidentally lost the shot courtesy of dumb computer)...I zoomed in on the crane. And when I zoomed in on the LCD screen I saw a little man beside it. Such would have been a mere blob with out the extender.

So no, the extender is not for all the time. And I'm not wasting my L glass because I can easily drop down to 200mm when I can capture the shot at L glass level.

Maybe wasting was a harsh word. If you are happy with the quality for your needs then it's great for you.

The Canon 2x extender...

The macro shots were in low light with high ISO...all were hand-held shots. I re-uploaded the moon shot after applying some post-processing sharpening.

I am sure if I had the shots tripod mounted they'd come out much better. And the macros would be much better in daylight. Even the rose which is illuminated by flash was just the on camera flash.

I'm also planning in getting a teleconverter. I don't know if a 1.4 or 2x. Probably Sigma is my choice. But the softness issue bothers me. And the fact that my Nikon 70-300mm D ED f4-5.6 become a f8 or f11. Is it really limiting for shooting? I find myself shooting this appertures most of the times when I shoot in shutter priority and I set the speed acording to focal distance. So I'm knot shure about it.

Probably I'll do a better deal saving the money to buy the Sigma 50-500mm

lol have you seen the Simpsons episode where Bart stacked 20 loudpspeakers, and created a sound wave that blasted the whole town's windows?

Don't do that!

The photos do look really soft. I got a sharper moon shot with my Canon S1 and a 1.6x teleconverter (but it took a lot of practice to get it).

I think you are wasting your L glass that you paid big $$$ for by using the teleconverter. Just my $.02

You now have a lot more reach, one thing is i noticed the photos lost a lot of sharpness, which is expected when you use a 2x extender, thats why most people settle for the 1.4x

Just got a 2x extender for my 70-200mm f/2.8, here are some of the results!

First off, I was really surprised at how good of a macro lens this combination is...(of course you have to stand about 2 meters away...) *lol*

The first is a small rose about 1"-2" in size, the second is the pinnacle of the resin model of Gondor that came with the LotR DVD.

And finally, I can see the craters on the moon...

(sadly, I lost the photos in download that I took yesterday of a freighter across the harbor....I zoomed in and could actually see a man standing by a crane loader)
