On Photography - Susan Sontag

I just finished reading this book and I find it very insightful as to the meaning behind photographs and the taking of photos. This book is a critique of photography as art, philosophy, and psychology. I've found her observations of the effects of using a camera on the photographer to be quite on the mark.

I've put Shake Hands With the Devil on my reading list since several people have recommended it to me.

Just thought I'd let you know that I got the Romeo Dallaire book last week and have read a good enough chunk to recommend it to all of you.

Yes, I've looked through that book...that would have been a great purchase!

I ended up buying Shake Hands With The Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda by Romeo Dallaire and Truth Needs No Ally: Inside Photojournalism by Howard Chapnick.

If you've been feeling a little blue, check out this book.

I admit that I haven't read it, but the customer reviews are as entertaining as the book description.

The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers - Scott Kelby

(I'd tell you my favorites for Fiction/reading pleasure, but I know tastes can be so varied. I prefer to invest in "Reference" books as I will use them over and over whereas I will not read a story more than once, so I get most of them from the library. I keep just enough Fiction to make my bookshelves look pretty :)

I know this doesn't answer your latest question but I came across this book that looks like it would be hilarious.

How to Be a Canadian - Even If You Already Are One

I haven't read the other two books but would suggest the one by Romeo Dallaire. I have only heard good reviews about it.

Okay...regarding Rwanda, I've been told that both "We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families" by Philip Gourevitch and "Shake Hands With The Devil" by Romeo Dallaire are great books.

For those who have read them, which one do you recommend more/first?

Once you're hooked you'll want to read the next 8 in the series. I'm waiting for the latest to come out in paperback.

Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind (read it!)

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman (only book when I cried... fantastic read)

The New Manual of Photography by John Hedgecoe (bible-esque)

I Highly Highly recommend these books. I have read all but the last of Terry Goodkind's and it is phenomenal stuff... for a one-book read, Anne Fadiman writes beautifully.

I really like "taking great photographs: How to get the best picture, every time, with every camera" by John Freeman.

And "digital photographer's handbook" by Tom Ang

Digital Photography Bible Desktop Edition - Dan Simon

This is definitely a great book for beginners, but I like to browse through it the night before going on a photographic day trip to refresh my memory on certain aspects.

Very good reference book for digital photography. Here's the link to the companion site that you can view certain things that he refers to in the book.

They also sell cd's but I just bought the Four Tet cd I was waiting for from another store...

Maybe I'll try and decide on a few cd's.

Which store is the GC for?

Chapters

I thought it may be Borders or Barnes & Nobles because they usually have extra 10%-40% if you wait for the coupon. Oh well.

Chapters/Indigo/Coles (or //www.chapters.ca)

I'd get "The Art of Seeing" but it looks like they're out of stock...
