my camera can only do a 16 second maximum exposure. But I would love to try.

True....

But nothing states you have to be able to enter EVERY challenge. People will complain, just like they complained about not owning a pet for the pet challenge.

*shrug*

Does that mean we shouldn't do the challenge? there are more than enough "other" challenges for people to compete in if they can't do more than a 5 second shot.

Not all cameras can take a long exposure.

I have a feeling most of the "night" entries are creeping up to 30 second exposures.

I agree....

I wonder if people will do odd things like an open shutter but manually cover the lens of a clock to have a photo depicting multiple positions of the hands....(if possible)

But hey...I definitely would like to see the results...

That sounds like a pretty good challenge. I bet you would get a funky mix of deliberate motion, skyline shots, strobe effects, etc. Lots of creative possibilities.

One second I think would be too short....perhaps the 5 seconds is good. But I don't think it should be too much less than that.

Works for me.

Even one second can be considered a long exposure.

Site Council will probably determine the best long exposure time...

Upto the photographer. Someone might do an over-exposed small aperture shot to show motion, or a long bulb astrophotography shot...or perhaps an infrared shot. Perhaps someone will do a manual shot in the dark with strob lighting to show multiple instances of said subject.

I don't want to set any other requirements beyond "long exposure" this way we'll have a good diversity but a common factor.

I wouild be more tempted to use 5 seconds as a minimum. 30 seconds is way long for many things. Plus there are a lot more cameras that can do at least 5 seconds than cameras that can do 30.

Also should the challenge focus on using long exposure in a low light situation, or on using it to illustrate motion in the subject

I think this would be a good challenge however I feel it should be a bonus challenge rather than the main challenge of the week.
