I can feel a lot of water/landscape shots comming. Personally, I am going to vote on creativity for this one.

The first thing that came to mind for me was the water. However, after thinking about it, and reading your post now, I think that finding another reflective item to create the effect.
I will vote creativity as well, along with the importance of the reflection in the picture. A simple photo of the reflection is probably not going to get a good score if there's nothing creative about it.

Why don't you just vote on each photo on it's own merit? Rather than expecting people to pull a rabbit out of the hat, and marking them down if they don't. Maybe someone's "rabbit" is perfecting a reflection shot. What a novel idea, huh?

Sorry to sound sarcastic, but must you all keep this up?

I have an analogy for you... I used to teach Step Aerobics. I became certified after studying for it and passing the written exam and leading a class of 100 other instructors. I then taught at a Boston based fitness club for nearly 3 years. After a while, it became old. Why? The "students"/participants of the class began to want the instructors (not just me) to keep adding more intricate steps into the routines, to the point it became rediculous. We retorted... if you want to do gymnastics, join a gymnastics team. I was not about to perform acrobatics over the step. I was there to teach fitness in a healthy, safe and fun way...

Photography isn't always about who can come up with the most bizarre shot. How about good clean photography ... sometimes simple is better.

Just an opinion.

I know what you mean Karen. A photo should never be voted down because there may be many other photos with the same subject especially in a challenge situation where everyone has the same theme. There are many elements that go into the creativity of a photo and the subject matter is only one of those elements. Some of the best works of art are actually quite simple in there subject matter but it is the way in which they are executed that make them powerful.

This particular argument has been ongoing on this site for quite a while... there are some people who will vote down a photo simply because there are others in the challenge like it... It's not worth sweating over.

John,

Just because you changed your username, don't think for a minute that I'm not going to think "Jim Seltzer" when you come to mind :)

Without getting into the systems we all use to grade photos...

In this week's challenge "My corner of the world" there are several sunrise/sunset photos...(as an example)

To me, this is a very boring subject matter and I suspect most of them will get 4's from me (5 being average).

It's a cop out shot...And as much as people will argue with me, I don't consider those shots to have much thought put into them. A sunrise/sunset happens in EVERY corner of the world...So, seeing one here vs. seeing one in Australia or in Alaska I'm not going to be too impressed. It's one thing to point the camera and press the shutter release button...It's a totally different thing to put some genuine thought and time into a shot. This week I went back twice to shoot the photo. First time I used a different camera and did not like the results. I then went back and did the same shot with a different camera. The fact that i put in some time into the shot is paying off already.

Right now, I'm thinking of several things that will reflect:
Buildings, Sunglasses, water...The obvious things people will use. And then I'm also thinking of a few more that are not so obvious. Now this challenge is rather hard to make my point on so my scoring will probably be a bit higher due to difficulty of the challenge but people who think "differently" tend to get higher scores from me.
