I should have NEVER ASKED!!!!!!!

I opted to take my olympus 5050 with me fishing last weekend. We were on the water at daybreak, it was cold, water I knew would be steaming, should make for some nice pictures...

I take everything out of my truck, placed the camera (which was wrapped in a ziplock baggie, didn't even really look like a camera) on top of the truck with cooler and tackle box. Help teh guy I was with unload his boat, get it tied up, parked his truck. Grabbed everything, jumped in the boat, realized my camera wasn't in the mix... a few minutes later, when I got back to the landing, there was no sign of it anywhere.

Someone must have nabbed it in the 5-10 minutes I was helping get the boat in the water at 5:30am.

@#$%@#@!!!!

And this 4 weeks prior to our australia trip! (it was my underwater rig)

BTW- Anyone have an olympus 5050 they want to sell???

Oh good, Prof Fate, you DID in fact get my email with my explanations.

Since I didn't hear boo from you after I sent that, I wasn't sure if it had made it to you. Glad it did.

I left it at home AGAIN 2 weeks ago and missed an opportunity to take a photo of Elvis in Redmond, who was crossing the street in front of me at a crosswalk. Well he is a sorry excuse for an Elvis, wearing regular clothes but with a horrendous Elvis wig that looks like it hasn't been brushed in years, and would burn up instantly if one put a match too close to it. I see him fairly often around the area so hopefully I can catch him again soon.

I take my camera with me EVERYWHERE. I have a nikon case that was designed for my 8700 and just toss it in the main compartment of my backpack. Its big enough to hold 2 extra batterys and an extra CF card. I usually have a backpack with me and bus or walk everywhere I go.... It's not so bad considering the size. Carrying an DSLR and lenses with my transportation situation would be alot more intense.

Mine goes everywhere with me, in an ordinary looking back pack from Eddie Bauer. There's been times when I just have my P & S, and one great opportunity was when the traffic was stopped on a divided 4 lane road, because a mother duck and her 5 fluffy babies wandered across in front of my car, I could have cried because just on that one day I had left the cameras at home. If I was to leave the camera in the car, I would take the memory stick out, just in case.

I carry my equipment with me everywhere, save for work or routine trips to shopping center.

My insurance company has been made aware of the equipment's existence and I keep copies of receipts/serial numbers for all of my equipment.

If something unforseen happens, I make a claim.

Thankfully, nothing untoward has happened, to date.

Everywhere all the time except when going to work. Even then I have my G2 in my car. On vacation or trips I bring the whole shebang in my Lowepro computrekker AW

For those of you who are not pro's, do you tend to carry your camera with you wherever you go (within reason, not to work daily)?

I am always a bit concerned about leaving $2k worth of equipment lying around in my car when I go various places, but I so often see ideal photographs in so many locations that I am torn...

Do I take along the gear at unknown levels of risk (is the the parking lot at that baseball game really safe)?

Do you forego the possible photo ops to reduce the risk? Just take your camera out on specific photo-op trips?

I'd like to hear from people how you deal with taking your equipment around.

CLIFF NOTES AT BOTTOM

I know this is really a really late response, but I take my camera with me EVERYWHERE. I don't care if I am going to a funeral (may leave it in the car...) or going to the moon I am going to take it with me! I have a custom made cut-out in my backseat that holds my stuff safely locked. You could break into my car and I can almost guarentee you wont notice where it is and if you do you wont get into it without anything short of a plasma torch.

I have had AWSOME chances at pictures because I have had my camera with me. The trick is being able to jump on the opprotunity and get the picture you want.

Really though... people arent as bad natured as you would think... Just keep your camera under stuff and noone would really think twice.

Cliff: yes bring it with you, you never know when you will need it.

That is an awesome setup you created for yourself! I really like it.

I have tried the 'shove it in a regular old backpack, but after wrapping and unwrapping lenses and towels every time I want to get shots, I have put it aside and gone back to a normal shoulder camera bag.

Could we get some details on how you created that pack? How did you attach the elastic? Where did you get the foam?

Thanks!

I did something similar, more out of financial necessity than anything else.
backpack, Dr Grind brand on clearance at toys r us, $10.
bought some material at walmart and velcro, $10
had some coroplast laying about (plastic corrogated plastic, used in sign making). had some batting laying about, well, ok, the wife did.

I cut the coroplast into 2" stips (depth of backpack) - the edges, two vertical ones and some little cross pieces. wrapped in batting, covered in cloth and added velcro. I tried to emulate the photo backpacks you see at b&h, etc.

I asked beetle about the straps..
as you can see the foam part was just thick foam with the holes cut out the right size. As to the lid: I bought a small piece of thick vinyl and cut it out to size to match the lid. I also bought some 2inch wide black elastic. I worked out the placement of all my bits like filters etc and their thickness. I sewed on the elastic first across (on both sides), then on the bottom. I left the top of the elastic open but attached a small piece of velcro (stitched on), then marked and stitched on the opposing piece of velcro onto the vinyl. When all the straps were on, I glued long strips of velcro to the back of the vinyl and to the inside of the lid. I chose to velcro it on (rather than glue it directly to the lid) just in case I want to make changes to it at some point. It wasn't difficult - even if you're not exactly brilliant at sewing. You do need to sew it, though, as the stick on velcro would NOT last the distance on the straps that you open and close frequently. I hope that helped. Cheers Karin

Hey that sounds like a good line for a commercial.

I try to take my camera, even to work. The reason is because I might see a photo opportunity to sell to a newspaper. You never know what you might see. As to what I do, I do leave my camera locked in my car in a glove box that can only be opened with a certain key, which I have with me at all times, or I have extras at home in case I lose it.

Absolutely, I take all my camera gear with me everywhere I go. I have seen too many occasions in the past where I saw some incredible scene or event... only to go ... " awwwwwwwwwww for %$#*&^$% sakes... " ....where's my camera!!!!

I must convey my gratitude to Beetle who took the time to impress upon me that even a "not so good photo" is better than no photo. I must also thank her for getting me completely addicted to this site and losing all of my former friends...........hehehehehe

Those machines are not supposed to affect computer equipment the way they would film.

Still, I usually let the security agents hand-inspect the cameras (they're in very small shoulder bags). Make sure you have good batteries and a card with some space on it installed, so they can turn the camera on to test it. This is a good use for the otherwise too-small card which came with the camera.

I too have a backpack that does not look like a camera backpack. give me some piece of mind, and with the child car seats in my car it looks just like a kids backpack (well, i got it at toys r us...).

I try to take it as often as possible. I should actually take more pics at my destinatiions. too timid i guess. My p&s (an older 1mp model) usually stays home, although i take it on long trips.

Crime is low here (most places) but i never leave it in the car unlocked. THe trunk is a good out of sight locale.

I like the cooler idea!

Missed too many shots to leave it behind...and wouldn't you know it, I crashed my my motorcycle into a careless man (what I would give for five minutes alone with him right now) and had my old CoolPix 990 to document [cringe] the accident. Lug my D70 everywhere. DSLRs have a huge advantage over, for example my CoolPix, for capturing fleeting moments.

If my car wheels roll my camera is with me, I have a cooler in my car that hooks into a power supply and when the temps get to extreme I plug in the cooler and in goes the camera, any time I have left the camera home I miss shots.

I take mine with me wherever I go. Or at least I can get to it quickly. Once ran back 15 blocks in Key West, Florida's 95 degree heat to retrive my Canon out of the trunk to get a photo of Mel Fisher, the treasure hunter squeezing my wife who was squeezing a gold ingot. (I know, "What the h.... is my camrea doing sitting in a hot trunK?")

I wonder though. . . how many of you have taken your camera from one end of Mexico to the other . . . and still have it?!

The only times I've forgotten my camera were the times I wished I had it with me the most. Only been without maybe a dozen times since I bought it a year ago...
