Why would it need to be a group of animals? Just because the definition uses the plural doesn't mean they have to be in a group, surely...

What I mean by that is if the definition used just "animal" that would seem to indicate that fauna only means theres one species native to the area, whereas "animals" would mean multiple species. Am I wrong here?

I agree here to David. I think fauna means horses, cows, anything that isn't set up to look like a house pet. And insects are not Fauna!???
they aren't even an animal.

"Wild" isn't the right word here for me. Fauna just doesn't imply people's pets to me, though a good shot of a pet will get a fairly good score from me, depending on how the artist presents it. I think. Maybe. Probably. Maybe.

Sure, I'd rate as well as any other wild... erm, thing that people submit. I guess you just have to shoot whatever is available, if theres no a great deal of subject matter you just have to do what you have to do. There should be some very interesting pitures, look forward to seein 'em all.

Just got back after three days in the countryside and "wildness". I have been chasing insects and birds so I will probably dream about them for weeks. I really hope people think insects (and birds) are OK because that´s what it most likely will be.

We made our own land, there is no wildness. :)

Damned birds, saw some hawks hunting, but they were too far away. And a big brown one (probably an 'Aalscholver') was sunbathing in a meadow with his wings spread wide, but next to the Highway where you can't stop. And a bee attacked my UV-filter wich is now covered with smears and yellow dust. If only I had the Macro mode on....... :)

I'm sure in some people's view it probably isn't :) Maybe it won't be pretty enough ?

We don't get them in our yard but do get the deer in here because they jump over the fences. They aren't to bad of a pest.
There was one night I got home late from a small trip and was tired. I started to get the kids out of the car and turned around to find 3 big bucks about 10-20 feet away from me staring at me. I was a little spooked and didn't move for about 5 minutes until they decided to move on. That sure woke me up!!

In a photography magazine I recently bought there was a feature about Tim Flach. He photographs animals in studio where he can control the environment better. There are some real great photos on his page! Just wanted to share that.

I have tried so hard to take a picture of a wild animal. It is tough when you don't have a telephoto lens. I seen so many deer, but they were to far away and every time I got a little close they would run off.

After reading the earlier posts on this topic my first impression is lighten up guys !!

Go outside - take a photo of an animal (which isn't wearing a collar and isnt in a cage) and apply a little common sense to the whole thing.

Are all the competition topics so heavily debated ?

I would vote highly for a well composed, "journalistic" shot of a dead animal or animals, if it had more to say that just "Here's a dead animal. Cool, huh." But that's just me. And I mean that quite literally!

ha ha ha! I don't think so but as mentioned herein this thread, beware, people's taste for dead animal isn't much with high score!

I will vote highly for photographs that show skill, whether or not the animal was "wild" or not. A portrait animal shot will express a certain "posed" quality while a wildlife photographer may exhibit more of a journalistic feel, as one can't always get an elk to pose properly. We are talking about two different kinds of photography here, and each should be evaluated on its own merits.

So shoot away and have fun! And get it in focus, please, unless you have some good reason why it shouldn't be.

Okay, I just made it thru the entire thread.
John is right. Everyone is too uptight about this. Take a good photo. Then, vote on the photos. Seems simple enuff to me.
All this.. "well, I'm gonna vote down" this and that .....
(shrug).
makes my head spin, so I will stop here.

I´ve said it in another thread and I say it here too.
Dogs and cats aren´t fauna - fauna is the "wild" animals around us.
And flora is the "wild" plant world around us.

Wild? Are you sure? I thought fauna = animals, and flora = plant life, flowers. (shrug)
