Ok, I didn't enter...but I thought the photo was suppose to contain all three... I see lots of entries that don't.

"Description: Your photograph must contain one or more of these items."
04/20/2005 01:51:35 PM · #3
But even this apparently clear statement can be interpreted either way: one or more of (any) of these items, one or more of (all) these items, one or more of (each) of these items... etc. Determined literalists will have a field day with nearly any sentence or description you can come up with.

I personally interpreted it that a picture containing one or more of any of the items would suffice, but knowing our voters, I decided to attack it literally and include all three.

It did not say "Your photograph must contain one or more of EACH of these items."

That is the only way that having all three would've been required.

I have voted as fairly as I can think to. I have voted ones with all three and ones with just one item just as high. I think what has made the difference in this challenge is the creativeness. Some are just really common and I can't score that the some as someone who worked hard to make theirs different. This is all my opionin of course so doesn't really mean a thing...... :)

I didn't enter, but now I've voted on them all I can tell you that all bar one of my top dozen marks went to images which depicted only one or two of the three elements.

I think some of those who tried to put all three in the image ended up with something flat and boring or so contrived the result was artistically challenged ;-)

i have all three :))

While we're on the subject of interpreting this challenge, I've received comments that say to the effect, "Your picture doesn't feature those rocks as a main focus".

I think people are reading into this challenge too literally. The instructions do not say that either rocks, scissors, or paper have to be the focus, just that the photo contain at least one of them.
04/20/2005 02:16:18 PM · #9
I've used all three but based on comments not everyone is seeing them. :^( Oh well - the ones that did have left some terrific comments - to them I say thanks for looking (and commenting)! ;^)

I agree and am scoring accordingly. The challenge said it must "contain" one or more of the three, it did not say it must "be of" one or more of the three.

Hrm...I'm really surprised that people are reading into challenges too literally.
Very, very surprised.
Hrm...Wow, what a surprise...

Although some I thought too common I've scored them all and nothing is below a 4...
04/20/2005 03:18:03 PM · #14
i wasnt sure if one or more of the 3 meant all 3 or not...i used all 3 ...figuring the more the betterin this case....but sometimes more is just more....wow this is getting addicting!!!!
04/20/2005 03:25:50 PM · #15
Addicting says it all! My bf bought me a membership last night. I was getting so jealous of watching him click "update" "update" "update"! Now I understand! I can't stop clicking!!!!

WOW! this people are really great! I recieved a comment, and it seems someone gave me low rate, just because, there was no SCISSORS AND PAPER!

this challenge rules state, that there should be ONE OR MORE of these subjects, and using all of them is not a must

hmm... scissors and paper?

However, that commenter might as well go shoot him/herself for all I care. I'm delighted someone else liked my photo this much:

Personally I didn't enter either but with the challenge title I felt that all three items should have been included so I voted accordingly. It wasn't that the others were bad photographs but showed a lack of creativity to me. Sure Rock, Paper, & Scissors as the objective might inhibit creativity but I gave higher points to those who used the terms of rock, paper, and/or scissors in some way or fashion and to me that was the basis of the challenge. To get all three and have a great quality picture would definitely not be easy. In any challenge I vote on the quality of the picture, the color and how it works with the subject, and if it is black and white I try to determine if that improved it or hindered the over all look. I want the picture to be like a work of art no matter what the style.

My only comment: "good coloring but hmm... scissors and paper?"

I think lots of voters want to see 3 objects!
04/21/2005 11:18:19 AM · #20
I've had some great comments so far. Some really helpful and some just enjoying the photo as much as I did. This is only my second entry but my best by far!

Then again, perhaps not since the vast majority do not make any comments whatsoever.

I just reviewed my first pass at scoring, and of the top 10 entries, only 2 contained all three items. Good luck to you in the challenge.

only two of my top ten votes have all three
04/22/2005 10:06:09 AM · #23
I have recieved comments on how I voted so wanted to add something else. Yes the criteria was pretty much that only one item was required. However, the challenge was still based on rock, paper, scissors. Not all of the photos I gave higher scores to had all of the items but they did address all of the items in some way. In some there was no actual rock in one I remember was a drawing of scissors but no actual scissors, and one had none of the items but still addressed the game rock paper scissors. That was what I looked for beyond the actual quality of the photo. But it was still based on my opinion so of course that is always imperfect, but I stand by it and it isn't anything personal. ;)

I think the point that people are missing is this. Your photo must not only be technically correct, it must be appealing to a wide audience. Having the best technical photo with no appeal will still bring you a lower score. Creative photos which may not be the best technically will still probably score higher. The photos that score the highest are usually the most creative and technically correct photos. Your job here is to sell your vision of the challenge to the most people. In this challenge I have gotten a few comments regarding the background I chose such as:

1. I like the backdrop color choice.
2. Background color choice is distracting but nice composition.

Does it bother me? NO, You are not going to please everyone, so you have a few choices:

1. Submit a photo that you really like.
2. Submit a photo that the masses will like. (If you're lucky, this will also be one that you like.)
3. Skip the challenge and wait for the next one.

It took me just a few challenges to realize that photos which I thought were pretty good, just were not appealing to everyone. Expect to get negative comments, art is subjective, you can't produce a photo that everyone will love.

The lyrics from a song come to mind, but I'm terrible with song titles and groups so I can't give credit to the artists:

"You can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself."

Bottom line, "Have fun" Thats why most of us are here!

I find this an interesting, but somewhat disappointing method of voting. Granted I am new to this site and have not been around long enough to understand the most important voting criteria, however as this is a photography challange I would have thought photo quality would be close to the top of the list of important criteria. Personally I look for eye catching images, and if they also address the technical requirements of the challange then a blue ribbon they deserve in my book. If the challange is not technically met, they should of course be given low marks (but this should not be based on our own chosen interpretation, it should be based on what the challange does, and does not, say). The blue ribbon should always go to: 1. the best image, that 2. meets the technical criteria.

The best voters I believe will always be those that can get past their own interpretations of a challange and acknowledge that when someone else has portrayed a different interpretation but still met the technical requirements that they are given equal treatment. Challange interpretation is part of the creative process; as artists we should all be aware that this is not an exact science - it is all about eliciting emotions through visual images which are of course highly subjective.

Again as a newbie it may be easy for me to say, but I think this process is most enjoyable when it is not taken so seriously, and it is seen as a fun means of extending technical and creative skills and exhibiting our work to a peer audience that can provide constructive critique. I hope the best image in the RPS challange (if which mine most definately was NOT!), as long as it addressed the criteria (which in my view all the best images did), wins.
