It is a creepy looking place - even when new. There is an abandoned race track just a few miles north of me in Pownal - Green Mountain Race Track. I have always wanted to go in there and take pictures. I just may do this now.

Action on this thread has been reversed, it was perhaps a bit precipitous :-)

I don't get why you keep saying there is nothing on the net, google searches come up dead, no or very few pictures on the web, etc. All I did was put in the name on google and tons of pages and images come up instantly.

threerivershistoricalsocietyaz.org/2010Q4.pdf

Although it\\\'s a thousand days late, in case anyone stumbles across
this thread while investigating the old AZ Trotter Park (as i just
did), above is where to find an interesting article that appeared on
pg 3 of a Three Rivers Historical Society newsletter (AZ\\\'s Salt,
Agua Fria, Gila rivers) in 2010.

It says the track closed because:
(owner/developer)\\\"Jim Dunnigan lost not only Phoenix Trotting Park
but his Roosevelt Raceway in Buffalo that he had used as
collateral [for the Phoenix project, which then became] ... a
victim of poor timing and location.\\\"

The newsletter piece goes on to say: \\\"The facility was purchased
by Emprise, rumored to be connected to the murder of Arizona
Republic reporter, Don Bolles.\\\" (Turns out \\\'Don Bolles\\\' died from
wounds suffered in a 1976 car bomb explosion -- which occurred
when he\\\'d been investigating a prominent local businessman with
ties to organized crime. A look back at the case after 30 yrs is in the Arizona Republic archives from 2006... archive.azcentral.com/specials

Now the plots interwine and thicken - For background, do an
internet search (separately)for Roosevelt Raceway\\\' and one for the
term \\\'track-eteering\\\' -- a word coined in the 1950s during trotter
track scandals involving New York\\\'s elected officials and ethics
laws. Roosevelt Raceway was one of several tracks involved.

Meanwhile, a search on Trotter Park developer Jim Dunnigan reveals
that his father was a NY state senator from the 1930s who is
considered the founding father of modern harness racing and sat on
the board of directors for Buffalo\\\'s Roosevelt Raceway...
A tangled Web indeed!!!

Yikes! Track-eteering... journalist\\\'s car-bomb death... unethical
politicians, Maybe it\\\'s good that the track never much caught on.

A little late on this, but here is a link to some shots I have taken of the place. Inside and out, as well as teh judges grandstand that is across from the main building. Sadly, scrappers worked the place over in the last year or so, which has lead to security being back on site, and accessibility is very hard once again.

Okay, it wont let me post a link since i am new, but my flickr name is jonno23, and it is one of the sets on my first page.

Aww, talk about nostalgia. (the OP) Brad! You back? On checking, I see you do wander in once in a while.

Thanks, semperhonorablus, for bringing this thread front and center again.
I don't know the site in question, so naturally, pictures would be welcome.
ETA: New pictures, of course.

It is actually an abandoned horse track. It isn't a historical building, and they could demo it with no issue. It is simply a money talk problem. It is on land that no one uses and has been rented out for movies a few times.

If Phx ever grows that big, they will demo it. :)

PS

Asbestos is absolutely dangerous, but if you take the proper precautions and know what you're doing (I owned a construction company and usually can tell what is and isn't safe) it is a simple problem with a simple fix.

:)

Hi I actually live by Goodyear and I was always wondering why that ugly old place hasn't been torn down and I was told that it's because it has Asbestos and if they were to blow it up or demolish it, it might be dangerous and was told that if you come in contact with so much of this Asbesto's it can eventually lead to Cancer. I have no idea if this is true or not but I would be careful if anyone is thinking of visiting the place. Although I find it to be an interesting place but I don't think I would risk it, I was also told that it hasn't been Demolished because it's a historical building , but not sure that is true either. Any way I just thought I would post this and maybe someone would know the real truth about this scary old Abandoned Trotter Park in Goodyear Az. , or as we call it ("The Dog Races")

BTW, if anyone has feedback or tips, I am always open to hearing someone else's perspective.

Thank you for posting this! There is no other information on this really on the web! I drive by several times a year and always want to stop and take photos but never know how to get there. Anyone been their lately and can give me some advice? Thanks...

I used to drive past the place everyday, back in 1990, while I was working at Palo Verde. At the time the local (at the plant) legend was that it was a stillborn dog track. Story at the time was that it had been built with Mafia money, and that the state found out a few days before the grand opening, and yanked the liscence "forever". Interesting how failure stories can get twisted so quickly. Failed trotter track gets bought by dog track owner, turns into Mafia dog track banned forever.
