As I went through and viewed this challenge, I nearly fell asleep. The same two subjects over and over and over. Luckily there were a few real standouts. My scoring was mostly in the 4 to 5 range, but I also gave more 9's for this challenge, than any challenge ever before, plus one 10. Very nicely done, by a few. Everyone else kinda fell into the same subjects and it was just boring for me.

Well Religious or not I for one believe there are lots of beginnings everyday - so for those who take the less beaten road I will still evaluate the photo on the merrit of quality in tune with their "In the beginning" idea. I hope to see Awesome Religious and other photos - I look forward to having the honour to vote to the best of my unbiased opinion!

I hope that is the majority in the way of thinking!?

Yes, I must say that this was a bad challenge topic for me to start with. I went through the same thoughts as you did.... what does it mean? How do I apply it? Ect. Then I just figured I would put something together and put it up here and if everyone else thinks it doesn't meet the criteria.... no loss.

But it is interesting... my submission is a picture that was in the first set of pictures I have taken with my new camera, which came in today. So this whole challenge is the first for me in many different ways. :)

If I had more time, a humorous approach would be the 30 minutes of ads you have to sit through before your movie starts at the theator. I guess that is in comparison to the billions of years that hot rocks were slamming into each other before the guy on the sign above said "Screw this cave... time to start a fire and get this evolution thing going..."

Mine is not religious either but I'm very pleased with it. I had a hard time choosing.

i think mine is going to be very cliche. Oh well, i like it :)

I'm just hoping that with a theme this broad, people won't do the usual and dock big points for pictures not obedient to whichever particular angle of 'In the Beginning' that they chose to take and dub them "Does not meet Challenge." I believe that the theme of this challenge broad on purpose; it's to get us thinking on all sorts of different levels. Just because a picture doesn't fit the same line of thinking that your picture did, it doesn't necissarily mean that it doesn't meet the challenge. Let's all repeat that last sentence together a few times before the voting begins.

(Ok. I'm hoping for comments--whatever they cover.)

Mine could be taken as "religious"--or not.
Mine could be taken as "cliche"--and probably will be.
Mine could be taken as "the beginning of the world"--but shouldn't be.

I just think that it will be a refreshing change from "Bored"--just home mine could not be taken as boring!

This is exactly how mine can be interpreted as well. :-)

Oh well mine is the religous one but i figured we would see a lot of repitition anyway so just trid to use this challenge to improve my photography skills since I am new to this, I had a lot of ideas on this but was unable to pull them off in this very early stage of experience... I'm thinking we will see lots of sunrise shots though. At least mine wont be one of those andi hope people rate mine based on the quality of the photo above all else..and i hope not to get any 1's :}

I've worked hard on this challenge. I just checked my edit folder for this challenge and I've worked 27 separate edits looking for that elusive perfection. I'm resting now, let the voting begin.

BTW, this challenge has grown to a respectable sized open challenge. I had hoped earlier that the field would stay small. 248 and counting as I write.

You could shoot the beginning of a race where is says "START" there's nothing that says it has to be the beginning of the world. Just the beginning of something. In fact, I bet that the people who try to capture the 'beginning of the world' will ultimately be setting themselves up for failure as everyone's perception is probably a bit different. Take the race for example, there is only one way to start a race -- no one can argue with that. Think outside the box.

FWIW, religious themes have not scored well in the past, though particular stories (like Adam & Eve) tend to do OK. Voters do appreciate a fresh approach if it's well executed, and I expect to see a wide range of interpretations (and at least one black frame). Cliches (like eggs) will bomb unless there's something exceptional about the shot. There are relatively few entries for an Open challenge, which usually means people struggled with ideas. I look forward to seeing what everyone came up with.

No, I just think there will be a lot of that kind of interpretation during the voting. I'm not one of those. There's always a lot of "does not meet the challenge" in certain challenges.

No, but you never know how the voters are going to go. Remember the two rules of DPC voter response:
1) The Voters are always right.
2) If the Voters are wrong, see rule #1.

I think we'll see lots of baby shots, cosmic debris, frogs emerging from ponds, sprouting flowers etc.

Personally, I've got nothing. The ideas that are stuck in my head, I can't execute.
