Anytime an extreme close-up is created extra time needs to be taken to be sure that there are no flaws. I thought your idea was good, but the yellow looks like it was a mistake rather than a focus. The nail polish is too matte to be actual polish and it's not applied evenly. The eyeliner is also nice, but the yellow on the lashes makes it look hastily applied. A second layer of mascara should have been applied over the spots of yellow. I'm a woman who doesn't wear makeup and viewing it mis-applied still grated on me.

I know this sounds harsh, but it's meant only to be a honest critique and no less than I would ask for from anyone critiquing my work, which you are welcome to do. ;)

Hope this helps,

I hope it helps.

I am not a woman, and I have to agree with the makeup issue. The idea and conception is great, but the yellow on the black stuff...not familiar with ladies makeup...spoils the effect. The yellow should have been covered by the black to create a sharp contrast.

Apart from that point...which I don't know a lot about cos I'm not a lady...the tight crop is great!

I personally like the outtake a lot better; it just carries more character and interest in my eyes.

As for the crop I like it just the way it is.

Hope this helps,

I like the crop as is. Compositionally, it just works better. The crop above by glad2badad is, IMO, too tight. I tried, just by resizing my browser, to see if anything worked, and at most I would crop just the dark part of the nostril. But I think even that gives it an unbalanced feeling.

I wonder how many people were looking at it where they couldn't see the whole picture without scrolling. When I first opened my browser, when I scrolled down to see the bottom (thus cutting off the top), then the nostril did seem very distracting and predominant. But after I resized my browser to see the whole picture at once, it just looks properly balanced the way you did it.

Maybe if you had painted her nostril yellow... ;)

edit... On the outtake, I'm left wondering too much what that yellow thing is on the left. I do like the eyes. As a photo (without the yellow thing), I like it. For the yellow challenge, for me, it would have been a little lacking. Maybe with streaks of yellow in her hair...

How about something like this?

Edit - image removed from portfolio

I've temporarily put the cropped image in my portfolio workshop...hope that is ok - I'll remove it after you get a handle on it? Not sure if doing this is legit (kind of new to the site).

...by the way, I liked the comment someone left on your photo about placing something yellow behind the camera to reflect in her eyes.

This was my yellow entry, and was curious. I had alot of comments about cropping, and wondered what crop would have set it off a little better? I agree now,(hindsight is 20/20)! I should have worked with a few different crops instead of my first.

Also, this was an out-take from yellow, and was wondering if you liked this better. Personally, I do! Thanks for everything!
