Well, I've just upgraded to the Finepix S5200Z. It has interesting improvements over the S5100, I'll post my impressions about this camera soon. It seems that the S9000 will have to wait...

Thanks drz01 for the info! I look forward to trying this.

I know! I couldn't use any RAW converters either... The whole Fuji line has "special" RAW formats that most converters could not process...

Hello Paul58 here is a great program that is free and does a great job with raw files from our camera... SR7 raw

Ah... If only that was the only thing that was too slow! I guess the thing I hated the most was how fast it drained out the batterys out so I had to keep it on "off" most of the time, then (this part killed me every time) was the... What, 5? 6? 7? 10 seconds it needed to be ready to shoot when you turned it "on"... Or whenever I would switch to view/shoot modes... I missed so many shots because of that. I just had to get a SLR.

I loved that camera too. I learned all the basics with it... But there comes a point when you want your basics to just work faster. But I agree, it is one small amazing camera. Great for beginners!
Actually, the deal was this... A year ago my cousin Anna gave me her Finepix 201a, wich got me started doing photography in the first place. Then, when I bought the S5100, I gave her back her 201a. Then, when I got my Nikon, we started shooting together sometimes and she would use my S5100. I taught her about aperture and shutter speed in manual mode. She kept bugging me to buy it. I wanted to keep it for the exellent quality of video capture (One of my favorite features on it). Anyways, she stopped bugging and I tought of how much of an asshole I was since she's the one I have to thank for getting me in photography in the first place. So I sold it her because I'm a nice guy (and needed the extra cash that week). ;-P

I agree!!! Still love my s5100. I don't have the money yet to upgrade to an SLR (just a poor grad student). But that is okay, because I love having the 10x zoom and so many manual features. The s5100 has taught me so much about photography and how all the manual setting react together.

I bought my 5100 about a year ago as my first (and only) camera, & have generally been happy with it, though I don't have any other experience to compare it with. It has it's limitations, but I'm having a great time discovering what it can do. Creativity need not be totally limited by equipment. At least I can easily add screw-on filters to broaden the possibilites. And, since upgrading isn't a viable option for me at present, I intend to get full use of & enjoy my 5100.

I am also enjoying getting into the editing side. I use Paint Shop Pro & love it (again, I haven't used Photoshop or any others to compare with).

You know, I still have and enjoy my S5100. I can not see getting rid of it. It has a definite place for me, since it cost only $200 after rebate. I figure I will take it places that I will never take my Canon Rebel XT.

Right now I have loaned it out to a friend who had their camera break and they only rave about what a great camera it is. Fuji still does the richest colors of any digital camera.

I'm still a S5100 guy at heart eventough my S5100 is in Vancouver right now while I'm in Montreal. My cousin had a business trip there and asked if he could borrow it. I pray nothing bad is going to happen. Usually, when I lend something to someone (it doesn't matter how much they tell me they'll take care of it) it gets back damaged, and that's when it gets back.
But I've been shooting with some lighting gear he lended me so... It was hard to say no. He's supposed to get back on june 3rd, I plan to use it on june 4th for the swimsuit / lingerie show. I'll take all the stage picture with my Nikon on RAW and use the S5100 for all the backstage (not dressing room) pictures of the organizers.
Let's hope it comes back in good shape. It's not that I don't trust him to take good care of it... Like I said, I just have a bad history of lending stuff to people...

Edited to add: OMG Prof Fate, regarding the Fuji Mug site referral, like I needed another challenge site to obsess over, lol. I added it to my favorites. I'll see if I can spare some DPC time for it......
