Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work that way. The toggle we both are referencing has to do with how LR *imports* the images into the catalogue, not whether they are visible or not. In order to see the JPGs on a set you had previously imported, you'd have to go back to the originals and re-import after that toggle had been enabled.

Annoying, but there it is.

Your frustration is palpable and the desire for an improvement is very reasonable. You have my sympathy. Now, partly against my better judgement, I go ahead with the classic guy thing where I suggest a possible solution (admittedly not perfect) even if the most important issue might be the frustration.

Until Adobe makes a change, consider this as a workaround. In the infrequent work sessions when you want to open the JPEG originals specifically, go to preferences ("general", first tab of preferences) and check the option to treat JPEG and RAW as separate photos. Actually, I leave mine set that way almost all the time, in part because I infrequently have originals in both RAW and JPEG. Then close and reopen LR.

When back in LR, you will see the JPEG originals separately. Might be a good idea to send Adobe a feature request to be able to toggle having RAW and JPEG together or separate without using a preference setting that demands closing and restarting LR.

If you go to your preferences in LR, the "General" tab, you'll find an option to check "Treat RAW and JPEG as separate images when importing". That'll take care of it for you, you will see both versions in your LR thumbs. But beware; that's just BEGGING to have yourself edit a JPG file when you can least afford to :-) Though, as a side-note, even if you DO edit from JPG, the RAW is a valid original in everything but a Minimal challenge...

That's the problem, everyone.

It's kind of silly to go through and rate and cull in lightroom, and then have to open a folder, keep track of the file number and find the jpg.

I can see the photo in lightroom. I filter by 5 stars, I see the photos. It says raw+jpg, so it knows about both. It just seems like I should be able to tell lightroom which one to actually open. :(

Wendy, take a look in one of your import destination folders. You should see both the RAW and JPEG files. It appears that when you uncheck the "treat JPEG and RAW as separate photos" option, the jpegs are moved to the destination folder, but do not appear in the Lightroom library. This is probably the way you want it. If you check the box, you will see both versions, and as you surmised, will need to do culling on both.
What I would do in this case is leave settings as you have them, and if you want to edit JPEGs, open them directly from the folder in Ps.

I don't use Lightroom either, but doesn't rating jpg files alter the exif? I don't always shoot RAW + jpg, but when I do I always save duplicates of the jpg files so that I have an untouched original if I enter a minimal challenge.

Good move! :-)

I don't use LR so I can't help there, but an easy workaround would be to import as you do now, then copy the JPEGs to a folder separately using drag-and-drop (preserves their "originality" too). If you need one for a Minimal challenge or email or something you can search in your catalog and then just go to//search for the JPEG using the image number.

I've often wondered this before, but I can't find it anywhere :(

I shoot RAW + small jpg

I don't really need to, but at least when there's a minimal challenge I'm ready. :)

I photographed an event for work last night, and it was REALLY dark. I was up around ISO 8000-10000 most of the time. I've realized in the past that the cameras automatic denoising for jpg is often better than I can do with any denoising programs I use.

So here's the question: When I import the files into lightroom, I treat jpg and RAW as one file. But once I do that, I can't ever find a way to access the jpg from lightroom. Stacking by timestamp doesn't make much sense, because if I'm ever shooting between 5-30 fps, it would stack all those together. I don't want to import them as separate files, because then I need to do twice the culling, because I still want the raw files, as well.

If it's importing both the raw and the jpg, treating them as the same file, I can go through, rate and cull easily. But how do I ever access the jpgs?

thanks! this is driving me crazy.
