Weekends? ... carry a camera in your car back and forth to work, just in case?

We WILL have a DPL again, but not until we have the new site, and I have nothing to add regarding when that will be, unfortunately :-(

Who did the WPL for us? I can't remember. I wonder if something like that is a possibility?

I love archival challenges. I wish we could keep them as they are.

Billy Pilgrim (from Slaughterhouse-Five).

I can't remember (or look up right now) the names of the protagonists of Marge Piercy's Woman On The Edge Of Time or Madelaine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time ...

People used this excuse when we went to 1200 px, and then when we started doing cell phone challenges.

There are plenty of opportunities for time travel. Never once did Dr Who or Captain Kirk charge money for time travel. All you have to do is find a new friend. I mean seriously, there's Arthur Dent, Captain Picard, Marty McFly, Ebenezzer Scrooge, Emmet Brown, Loki, Hermione Granger, George Bailey, Peggy Sue.

Surely you must know someone that could help. Personally, I'd pick Thor, but my husband won't let me.

Let's make this official: Beginning in May, we'll run Archival challenges twice a month, one on Mon/Tue open to all comers, and one on Weds/Thurs for paid members only, separated by 2 weeks. For the remaining 6 or so challenges each month we'll be running regular, themed challenges, barring any special exceptions. Free studies will stay the same.

Great!
That sounds like a good compromise.

After living like hermits for two years, and having had 4 vaccinations, my husband and I decided to live a little, went to a 3yearold's birthday party and promptly caught covid. Positive test was 9 days ago and we are waiting on the official release from isolation. We haven't been too sick. Much like a cold. But at least now we will be released from the fear of catching covid.

Archival challenges certainly have their place in the present scheme of things.

Hope you at least got some decent photos at the birthday party? :-)

Haha, not really. 3 year old was standing on his head on the couch. I asked him if I could take a photo of him doing that and he ran, screaming, from the room :-(

We have been running pretty much all archival on the open challenges during the pandemic, to allow participation during times when travel is difficult. We are talking about how and when to scale that back a bit.

I agree with Gabriel. If there are people who are still having difficulties getting out, why not still have archival challenges each week, but make it a member challenge one week and an open challenge the next week? If people are relying on the archival challenges, it may be a good incentive to rejoin -- become a member again. Then maybe they'll dip their toes into some of the regular challenges?

So we stand a chance of roping people back in while also continuing to help people that are still unable to get out as much as they'd wish.

I'll take another look when I get time in the next day or two, but if it was like the last time I looked those that are coming back to enter Archival challenges infrequently enter "regular" challenges. IMO, this takes AWAY from what DPChallenge is all about and that is the "challenge" in obtaining a photo, with a theme, WITHIN a two week window. Not, challenge yourself to scroll thru your archives to find something that fits, or was simply an outtake from the last time the challenge theme was run.

I love this idea. Unfortunately I don't get out to shoot much these days and the archival challenges are keeping me in the game. It is also fun to re-discover pictures from the past and edit using different skills than I had years ago.

I'm not advocating a full removal of archival challenges. I perfectly understand how important this could have been during the lockdonwns, and I also think that it's a good "first step" for newcomers or rejoiners.

What I'm trying to convey is that I think that non-members should also have the possibility to enter a non archival challenge. Right now ALL of the open challenges are archival.
I think that non archival open challenges might be a good intermediate step to "bring" people into membership.

One non-archival open challenge every 2 or every 3 ones would perhaps do the trick.

FYI you can always shoot for the challenge, just because it says “archival” doesn’t mean you need to enter an archive. I for one love the archival challenges. I’m over shooting for challenges.

Please keep them an open challenge.

Also something to consider: Having them on every open challenge could be rather disheartening for new users, simply because people are able to go and pick out their best photos from a large collection. New users could also pick out their best - but if they've just started, they haven't had the large collection, and haven't had the opportunity to see how similar things have done. Switching off between open and member challenges for the archival gives a more even playing field. I too like the archival challenges for the same reasons listed.

Curiosity -- Are the larger number of entries because they're archival? I know a large part of it is. But how many people are only participating in the open challenges who aren't members?
04/13/2022 06:04:42 PM · #25
Run only one a month, if you must.

edit to add: I started participating again regularly because of them. I have MS and can't always get out to shoot for something in particular. Partly because of ability.

If they go away altogether or become so irregular in frequency, I (and I assume others) could lose interest in DPC again. With the archival challenges, there is a challenge that I can participate in whether or not I enter other challenges that are running. It keeps me coming back. The goal should be to keep people coming back even if there aren't other challenges the suit their fancy that week. Too many of those could let people "forget" to come back & look for what's next.

I, too, am waiting for those "big changes".
