My entry

The latter was withdrawn for technical reasons. I tried to fix the banding noise in the bottom wing (not very successfully), but wish I knew how to prevent it in future shoots.

that fly is an extremely attractive guy .. !! ..
you mentioned that he didnt seem bothered by the flash ..
thats something i found strange when i first started photographing insects .. if your shadow falls over them they get spooked and usually fly away .. but the flash ... they're not bothered at all .. which is awesome .. because most of the time i would use the flash because most often the available light isnt good enough shooting macro ..
anyway .. i think the fly may have gone better than the birds .. of course i'm very partial to flies so i may be biased ..
but its very very hard to say which would have appealed to the voters more .. you really nailed the focus on the bird's eye which would give you major points . . and i dont mind the wing thats blurry .. gives that feeling of movement .. and i really like the way the wings are positioned .. like he's pointing the way ..
so i'm sure i have helped you enormously .. lol .. NOT ..
just thought i'd put my 1 cents worth in .. :)

The motion blur didn't bother me too much. My problem was banding noise in the unedited version;



For the version I posted originally, I tried to fix it, but my editing skills leave a lot to be desired.

I started a thread about the problem on DPReview when I was still considering using it as my FS entry. Apparently the problem is rolling shutter caused by the electronic shutter. I wish there was a way to avoid it, but without pre-burst mode (using the electronic shutter) I would never have got the shot. I just hope it doesn't ruin too many of my photos.

As for the fly, I was pretty happy with the result. No chance of using that shot in colour though because the sticky mess he was dining on looked disgusting.
