Ahhhh! Put the lid back on the huge can o' worms! ;-)
Pretty much since the advent of the digital sensor, the "magnification > 1" criteria has been obsolete. Most folks, including myself, take a more inclusive approach, I think. If you include less than 36mm of image width, that would meet the criteria in the strictest sense (since that was what the original definition implied when used with a 35mm camera). I'd suggest that magnifications down to about half of that are just as defensibly "macro" as opposed to close-up.
That's my two cents... others may have stricter or less strict interpretations. |

Any strict technical definition of macro? Normally enlargement factor > 1, so larger than life, but previous challenges also close-ups were submitted.
Just to add: it makes a big difference. With real macro you usually have to take the object as-is and find a nice perspective, light, interpretation etc. Closeups can be large enough to manipulate , to create a scene/picture. Oops, this addition was written during kirbic's answer.
