Politics hide in so many challenge topics these days...

Agree with that, she is exceptional and would make a great benevolent dictator ;)

The gov in this country have failed its people big time, I'm not sure about the truth in other countries but it seems NZ acted fast and effectively because they have a decent gov in place.

Yes, and Brexit won't help.

Thanks for the link.
I tend to ignore most of the bullshit I read online without verifiable sources. Obviously my friend isn't infallible or omniscient, but if she can't corroborate something I need evidence and sources.

No worries, I got the link from my niece who lives in Australia. ABC News is definitely a reliable source, unlike BBC these days.

PS I just realized that ABC News also exists in the US! My source is Australian Broadcasting Corporation! In Australia where there are quite a few great scientists :)

My friend is one of the leading epidemiologists in the world for influenza and corona viruses. She isolated the current SARS-CoV-2. I asked her this morning while dropping the kids off at school about this and it's news to her.

Once there is a vaccine for Covid-19 we will need it only once like for measles as the virus does not mutate according to the current scientific knowledge.

6 months later it looks that it does mutate into a more contagious strain. What it means to the many vaccines under development?

The other scientific news is that the history might repeat itself. 5 years after the outbreak of Spanish flu there was a wave of new cases for Parkinson's disease. It is thought that it might happen again as the virus can cause brain inflammation.

It is really, REALLY best not to catch it.

We're acutely aware that the global pandemic is affecting all of us to a greater or lesser degree as we go about our lives. Our Italian members, for example, are basically restricted to their homes for the duration. It looks like everybody will get slammed by this sooner or later :-(

Obviously, DPC issues are not foremost in anyone's mind right now, but for what it's worth we have decided to schedule at least one challenge a week, usually the open challenge, as an ARCHIVAL challenge so those who can't get out can still participate. We'll also try to schedule more challenges that can be shot in the home.

Hopefully everyone's OK? Certainly, there's been ZERO mention of the Pandemic in the forums, but that doesn't mean much....

Anyway, good luck everyone and soldier on!

Thank you so much. All's well here in our little neck of the woods.

Time will tell who was right - UK style small and slow steps, or Singapore style aggressive finding every case and tracing all people who were in contact with a sick person and putting them into a compulsory 2-week quarantine. Singapore seems to have upper hand at the moment with no deaths and a very small number of cases but they are a very small country where such measures are easier to implement.

6 months later stats: Singapore - 5 deaths/million population, UK - 616 death/millions. These figures speak by themselves.

???
I see over 40,000 deaths reported for the UK, 27 for Singapore (which IS still extremely low).

John Hopkins University Tracker

Margaret's number was 616 deaths per million people

Oh. She did math! Not fair. :-}

Not a good idea to copy UK! We're just heading back into lockdown in various regions of the country (where I'm located being one) with UK wide further restrictions put in place for the foreseeable future. It's grim.

… We have a "State of National Disaster" - nobody really knows what that means, we are encouraged to practice social distancing, our schools are closed, all gatherings with more than 100 people are forbidden, our borders are largely closed.

I hate to write this, but I am sooooo tired of this hype. Don't misunderstand, I am all for being careful and mindfulness, including social distancing, I understand the need to flatten the curve of infection rate, I just don't get the Hysteria. Doctor friend of mine told me yesterday, they have 160 000 influenza deaths annually in Italy - nobody gets hysterical about that. There are vaccines for the Influenza, but only 8% of the population get them, despite the high number of deaths, and now we go into a total panic about this?

Stay safe everyone, stay healthy, but pls don't get hysterical.

So. Are we hysterical yet? The above post was from 3/18/2020 in this thread (6 months ago).

So sweet of you! I'll see what I can do! :-D

Maybe it's time to pick up my camera again. I quit photography last year and haven't missed it at all work-wise, but making and creating something again can be nice in these strange times!

Maybe I'll participate in one of the (archived) challenges. It would be nice to do that again :)
