Do want fairness and consistency. As for "not broken", that too is a subjective opinion. You're entitled to yours.

Okay.... How would you implement this system?

Would it only be for the Top 5 places? What are you going to do with all the images that get one ribbon? How will you rank the rest of the entries?

It sounds complicated and time consuming. The way it works now is reliable and somewhat automatic. What you're suggesting sounds like it may require live input and if not, a fairly complex system of sorting the.....I don't even know what to call them....votes.

Who is going to spend all this time to do all this? SC is a non-paying job last time I checked, and again, other than the semi-regular "I don't like how the scoring works", DPC keeps chugging along.

I'm trying to figure out what the big deal is. The scoring is merely a gauge. People voting differently, but consistently will all come out in the averages.

So as to that being "Not broken" how do you figure it is?

But we're now seeing challenges where you could score 4-6 images and leave the others alone, which isn't just unfair to those who put in the time but also allows one or two people with specific likes and/or dislikes to disproportionately impact the results. Even with those who don't vote on anything lower than a 6, if one of those images is in the top 10 they are technically rewarding it by not scoring it in a way that will drop it down. In the Art challenge 0.05 points separated 3rd from 5th. A single 5 or less to one of those images could have moved the 6th place image up and kept any of those from the front page. No one wants to kick folks in the shins, but in a way you do by not doing your job,

We're never all going to vote the same, but it would be nice if those who vote give a score to (at least nearly) all for their opinion to count.

Yes, please!

Did not ask for an opinion on what to post in more than 8 years but by chance I did it for this Best challenge: asked a person whose opinion I trust.

I got almost the best criticism ever, here. As the consequence I decided to go in a different direction and posted something else but these two critiques helped and I enjoyed them more than a bunch of high marks.

Yay!

I miss people saying constructive critiques in comments... not just the good stuff. I appreciate the "bad" stuff more, I think. It's how I grow.

I almost never get that any more. It's probably because they've been not appreciated in the past. I know I've gotten bad feedback on things I point out. So, I don't do it anymore either. *sigh* That's sad to me, since that's my favorite part about DPC... people helping people learn.

Maybe as part of the site upgrade we can let people state their preferences regarding the type of feedback they want, kind of like this example from a non-photographic (writing) site; the category could be displayed below the title on the voting page:

I came here looking for critiques and criticism, but the only place I ever got it was in the DPL group thread and on my posts here in the forum. ;)

I've made my piece with the haphazard way in which voting can be done here and that there are no standard methods other than 1-10 = Bad-Good, but as you guys update this place the one thing that I would ask that you change is the minimum percentage of votes that must be placed for your vote to count. 20% was implemented at a time when there were hundreds of entries in ever challenge and "no one got time for that!" Thanks, one of the things I used to love about DPC was feedback and it isn't hard to comment when it isn't 300+ entries. All comments are my own 2c of course. Opinions are like..... everyone's got one. :) I was just about to post something that probably wouldn't have done too well in the Blue challenge but I shot in RAW and don't have time to reshoot. So meh, oh well.
