Any use of a link as a redirect would incur the same penalty as moving the catalog off the fast drive. Moving the catalog to a rotating drive will incur a substantial penalty in response time, however the real impact on the responsiveness of the interface would be up for debate. There's no reason not to try it. To do so:
- Quit Lr
- Copy the catalog.lrcat, Previews.lrdata, and (if present) Smart Previews.lrdata files to a folder on the rotating drive
- Double click the catalog.lrcat file in the new location; it should launch Lr with that catalog open.
- Test the performance of Lr. If it is acceptable, you can then delete the files in the old location.

First thing to check is how long you are keeping the 1:1 previews. If you are keeping them longer than you need to, you can reduce that time and greatly reduce the number. The 1:1 previews are the largest of the files, so that would gain the most space.

My c drive is a small SSD. And the lightroom folder with the previews is taking up close to 80GB!!

Help!

It says I should have the previews on the boot drive. The photos themselves are on a 4TB drive.

I need the space and I don't have anything else to purge.

Suggestions?

And if I move them off, do I have to move them through lightroom (like you have to do with the photos)

Thanks!
