Am I the only one who thinks this could be a fascinating challenge topic? "Overcapacity of Harmony"... Hmmmmm...

This almost made me spit my coffee! It's a wonderful sentiment, and the fact that it is darkly humorous is a sad reflection of our current state of being.

If the Chinese speculated in tulips, like the Dutch, how pretty their cities would be.

Thank you sharing!

I was reading an article about two currency system in China "CNY" and "CNH" where they play around with those and results looks good for outside world which makes me nervous because if China fall down, rest of the world too.

China has reduced poverty enormously. Maybe they do that by keeping people employed regardless of whether the products they produce are actually needed?

Smacks of a Communist Party edict to make shared bikes available, ignoring what the actual demand would be... or over-enthusiastic entrepreneurs testing the market. Either way, what a monumental waste.

I've been very curious about this - what in the world brought this about? I don't see this ever happening on that scale in the US. But maybe the scale is proportionate to the population? Or is it something the government funded or encouraged? Remember too, that they built huge cities that sit abandoned because the overestimated the demand or desire for people to move into them? Huge waste is right! I gotta believe there is nobody hungry or homeless in China that they have the capacity for such enormous waste.

Anyone have any insights?

Hmmm... since the street people and homeless of Portland, OR are always steeling bicycles when ever they can get them, I wonder if we could use these pictures as bait to lure all of the street and homeless out of Portland and over to China? Just think how many Portland street and homeless could fit on a container ship heading that way? If only the Oregon government was smart enough to take advantage of the opportunity.

I am surprised they haven't loaded them on container ships and shipped them to the US though. They could advertize them on the nightly infomercials... "Call now and we'll include a 2nd genuine Shanghai bike for Free, just pay separate shipping and handling! Colors are limited so order soon."

In Melbourne it seems the river is a favourite parking spot for them.

I don't see the problem in NYC if there is one. People seem to like the Citi Bikes and since they're tanky and don't move too quickly, they're way safer for the pedestrians around them!. I thought when they started this it would be a disaster, but it seems well managed. I guess we're lucky?

I hear the same thing is happening in Sydney and no doubt other places.

I don't know the ins and outs of this, of course, far from it, but from what I have read of RURAL China a bicycle is a precious thing there. Which leads me to wonder, why haven't these bikes been transported en masse to the countryside and given to people who could use them?

This seriously makes for some very interesting pictures.... Tate . why do you think these bikes aren't being used? Or how do you think it happened that they decided to employ so many without knowing the demand?
Such a shame.

Spectacular and weird. Such a disconnect between supply and demand. It struck me as particularly bizarre that bikes are being repaired and new ones made.

fabulous and spectacular. I mean the wonder of it: who will wrest the meaning of it, who will write the musical?
