Back when I only had the Dx body D70, I got the 12-24 lens. What I learned right away is that my idea of "wide angle" could be accomplished much better by stitching together images from my 24-70 lens to make a wide panorama image. The wide angle 12-24 lens was not so great for the panoramic views I had in mind. But it ended up being very good for the things wide angle lenses do well. Gradually I learned how to actually use the 12-24 mm range to get exaggerated close items, good medium distance items, and wonderful distant items (smaller scale then initially expected) to come together in a true wide angle shot.
So I'll second the recommendations for the 12-14 if wide angle is what you seek (or want to learn). By the way, welcome to DPC as a newly registered member. |

12-24 while wide AF, I think is not the best wide angle lens to have for a Dx camera body. Look at the Sigma 16-35 f/1.8 ART. The best wide angle zoom for a crop sensor camera. 12 mm sounds nice, but you'll get barrel distortion on the wide side, and 24 isn't enough of a reach. |

The 70-300mm is ok but I found that most of the wildlife wasn't close enough for what I was shooting. I purchased the 150-600mm Tamron....love it...but it's a monster to carry around!!!
Here are my thoughts on wide angle...I have an 18-200mm (it's my walk-about) and a 12-24mm...there is a world of difference in the two. When I want a "true wide angle shot" I pull out my 12-24mm...it gets the job done and there is SUCH a difference between 12mm to 18mm. You wouldn't think there would be that much of a difference but there really is....
Whatever you get buy as much as you can afford...the larger the f-stop the better (f/2) |

Hi,
I have a Nikon D5500 and kit lenses 18-55mm / 55-200mm and also the 70-300mm from a safari trip to Africa.
I am planning on travelling to the Galápagos Islands, Bolivia and Peru doing the Inca Trail.
I love taking landscapes and wildlife photography.
I am thinking of updating my kit - weight is a main concern for me.
Any thoughts on using the Nikon 10-20mm + Nikon 16-80mm ? With the 70-300mm when shooting wildlife.
