I initially thought I couldn't find something as his signature style is dramatic landscapes that I don't have convenient access to. But there is a lot mor in his portfolio than that. Some of what I saw would only perform mediocre on DPC.

I'm in! I'm hoping to get as high as a 5.1, but guessing a 4.7

Looking at his LIST of portfolios I don't think his "style" is quite as restrictive as the challenge details imply -- I myself went through his "Coastal California" collection (since that's where I live), but I also see collections from Peru, Iceland, Kenya, etc. -- probably have to skip "Double Exposures" under this rule set though ... :-)

"...Well... I still say that THERE is no way..."

I don't mind at all a "knowledge so far" challenge... or a "learn something new" challenge... but... a "location of the world" challenge is hard to overcome easily.

Well... I still say that this is no way that the flatlands of Florida or the cityscape of NYC will EVER give way to a desert landscape of David Muench.

And, therein lies the challenge unfairness of some challenge topics.

Like Spring... for Australians in April.

Possibly could be done... but is it right to have a challenge where the lower half of the world don't have a chance?

I think not.

P.S. Hi, Wendy!! *hugs*

Hi Wendy! Welcome to DPC! :-) (Seriously, though, I've always loved your attitude toward the challenges. And you've definitely made it work for you!)

Holy crap! I leave for a short bit and we're complaining about everyone being able to shoot for every challenge??

One of the last things I saw before taking a break was a suggestion that was nixed because people with cell phones or point and shoots might not be able to enter.

We have so many challenges available. Isn't the point of the website to learn and explore? Challenges should cover all areas. When we did studio lighting type challenges, I used my husband's shop light and bought a 300 watt light bulb. Was I competitive with allenp? Absolutely not. Did I learn a lot? Absolutely. And I went on to explore more and love playing with lighting.

We NEED a wide variety of topics. We NEED to be able to think out of the box of we can't meet a challenge.

And I was disappointed to see people complaining about discussing a challenge before it starts. Seriously? This is our chance to do it! Let's start discussing ways to meet the challenge if we don't live out west? If his only contribution was he took pictures of the West, that's rather lame. What about the photos works? Anyone can take photos of a western landscape, why did he stand out in some people's minds? How can we look through his lens and see our own areas?

Discussions like that aren't trying to influence votes. It's the type of things we SHOULD be exploring and considering. That's how we learn, and that's why I'm trying to start entering again.

The sheer amount of knowledge that I've gained from being in this site is really quite fun. But what's more important is that it didn't come from the things I knew how to shoot: it came from the things that truly challenged me. Most of which were complete failures as far as challenge results go. But I was able to take that knowledge and apply it to the things in which I was interested and it did some amazing things.

i browsed through his profile and find it pretty boring, in the sense of not really being impactful or inspiring.

if it weren't for his subject matter, and that he published books on America's national landmarks/parks, i doubt he'd be as popular as he is.

he's no Ansel Adams IMHO

just sayin'

I don't think I get the concept of style being divorced from content.

Ok. So, just call it a 'Landscape Challenge' then? ... and if it doesn't have a Western, Rocky flair to it no worries, eh?

As for it not suiting all members, that's true, and given the rising number of participants in current challenges it doesn't really matter.

Ok... but.. it should be at least possible for everyone to easily shoot for every challenge topic.

I know that you can argue that everyone has a scene they can shoot.

But, let’s ask people in New York City to shoot this.

What are you imagining that they will shoot for a challenge that requires us to emulate a gorgeous landscape scene or some zebras drinking from a lake?

Ok, I'm sorry, but who in the world suggested this challenge, and why was it promoted to the front page?

I agree, David Muench is a very talented photographer, but his subject matter is quite specific and the landscapes he takes cannot be widely available to the DPChallenge membership, is it?

"...known for portraying the American western landscape."

How much more specific, and narrowing, can we get?

Yes! My point exactly!

It's not bad enough to have a landscape challenge... but we have to have an "Expertly Done Landscape" challenge.

Yeehaw!

I'm in.

complete opposite for me here in Taiwan. We have the largest number and density of high mountains in the world. There are 286 mountain summits over 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) above sea level on the island.
