I prefer vague challenges... Just say portrait and let the photographer decide if a dog, cat, goldfish or kid is a fitting subject... It seems we tend to want to stuff the challenges into very tight guidelines... I for one, think "Portraits" would be a good challenge, but that "Portraits in available light of humans between the ages of 18 and 35" would sap the creativity out of the challenge...

But that's just me :)

I should probably clear up the fact that I LIKE the protrait challenge idea. Just think that it should be specific, and to not include children that could have their feelings hurt. I mean, I 1 year old isn't going to care if he places low, but a 9 year old might. especially if she or he is a little self consious to begin with. I just hope that people will take this into consideration. Maybe take their portrait, but not tell them exactly WHY, or explain it to them ahead of time that the people can sometimes be cruel. A 9 year old would be excited about this, and wouldn't understand the "technical aspect" of the photo, only that it is a photo of them. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be very careful with this one.

I sense a lot of nudity. You would have to give a very specific definition of "portrait". Also, I see a lot of people getting "hurt feelings" if their prized photo of their child places low. Not only to mention the feelings of the child. Probably better to leave our kids our of it. huh? i thought about children as a topic, but sensed a lot of hurt feelings and we could all do without that. Don't really know how I would feel if a portrait of my son got "visual appeal: NONE".
On the other hand, nudity. Now there's a challenge. LOL!! Except I wouldn't have anyone to photograph! (i'm just KIDDING by the way).

I'm surprised that portraits hasn't been a challenge already (not that it isn't one that could be done over and over again). Surprised and glad. It's one that we'll inevitably have to get to and I'm glad I didn't miss it. I'm a horrible portrait photographer (although actively working to correct that), but I LOVE to see portraits that really capture a person's spirit. Would take HOURS to vote, but I'd love every minute.

So, you hook up a webcam, send me the URL, and I'll photograph my monitor -- should provide a suitable "grainy" photo...no, that was last week...maybe it would qualify as a "new" technique.

Some people have portraits done of their pets--I just wanted to narrow the field.
