I think you made the right choice. The closer crop has more detail, but it removes the whole experience of that high speed falling down effect.

I had a few alternative edits and crops I was undecided about.

I was especially torn about the last one, as I wanted the extra detail available in the closer crop, but also the gradient to the horizon.
