I try to leave comments on what I vote 1 or 2. The problem is that when I do, I'm deluged with emails telling me why my opinion is wrong. It makes me want to stop leaving comments unless they are positive. Top photos I usually don't have comments about other than the usual "nice job" etc., etc. which aren't really constructive other than as an ego stroke. Recently, I've made it a point to go to a percentage of what I vote as middle of the road and comment on what I thought prevented me from voting the image higher.

Now if I could only practive what I preach...

The expression of the baby is just so precious and your title fits the picture and vice versa. It also helps that the hand of the father (?) is very strong. Try also cropping tight - just the palm, the head and part of the shoulder of the baby.

Actually did a tighter crop, but this seemed much more effective.

Thanks for the comments.

Aguapreta- your retouched version is even better. That certainly would have ribboned.

I wasn't surprised your shot did so well aquapreta.. it's a great shot!

I voted it quite high, and I extend my congratulations for taking over temporary top-spot on the Fuji S7000 :)

I have some work to do.. I held the spot for all of 2 days.

Ditto. One of my three favorites for that challenge.

Maybe DPC should consider a must comment voting system on low and high votes. I don't know if it can be applied or if it has been suggested before. Example would be:
1. A vote of 1, 2, or 3 requires a comment.
2. A vote of 8, 9, or 10 requires a comment.
3. If the comment has nothing to do with the photo and why you gave it such a score the vote is deleted [not counted]

It seems to happen to most people
but certainly seems unfair when an image fits the challenge
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/259/thumb/106502.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/259/thumb/106502.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

The baby image above is just so beautiful

My image in touch definaetly fit the challenge but I received many low scores
Place: 103 out of 283

1 8
2 15
3 26
4 38
It did fit the challenge

Three votes? Try ONE! In the Feet challenge, one voter without a camera gave an 8 to the Blue winner, but didn't vote at all on the Red- that was the difference. I'm not saying my image was better than Eddy's, just that the circumstances are funny. ;-)

I don't mean anything nasty by that - just I would expect it to do better in a Free Study than the others.

its all in different context though. it doesn't mean that the other photos are necessarily better cuz they scored higher, it just means that in the context they were in, they were great. a lot of point are accorded to how it meets the challenge. the one you picked as your fav was a free study, but it would not score high in the other challenges.

That is my point - the point being that the photographs on DPC are not judged on pure photographic quality / ability / beauty etc so one cannot measure from that how well one is doing photographically. It has a lot to do with meeting challenges.

Just trying to explain why some photographs rank low when they are apparently good, and others high when they are apparently not so good.

I just read the last comments stating that "It got hurt by the 1s and 2s". That makes you think that there may be a "sabatoge" vote there. I agree that certain images may not be as "moving" as others but to kill the shot by giving it a 1 or a 2 is somewhat reckless. Suppose that at the end of the challenge I was to "sabatoge" competing images by giving an extreme vote, would that not be manipulative and deceitful? Hows this, 1,2,9,10 demand a comment or will not be counted. As well, vote for all of the images or vote for none. Either way requires a commitment. After all, I suspect that alot of us participate so we can learn from the sincere input of others. There is no sincerity in half-hearted efforts and reckless voting.

Oh my...............this is borderline right wing!!

Also, three of the four in the "ranks lower than these" had pretty low participation, so I'm guessing they were done early in the site's history. As more and more people participate, and as expectations get raised because of the awesome stuff we see here, I think the average score will go down.

Donna,

I understand your frustration with low scores. As long as you can mold that frustration into better pictures then you can turn a negative into a positive.

DPC is a general audience with a strong affinity toward the challenge topic which can skew voting. One unvarying quality, however, is image technical quality. That is the one area where you have total control. Exercise it.

The images you identified, with the possible exception of the first one, received low scores most likely because of their low technical quality rather than their content.

(BTW, I added my review to your Complexity entry)

I think it could be a little better in focus, and maybe could be softened a little. perhaps with neat image as it gives a cool effect.
10/05/2004 12:07:41 PM · #23
About my photo:
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/260/thumb/108083.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/260/thumb/108083.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

What I was trying to capture is the yello leafs framing the red and the green. And the red leafs leading the eye into the photo and disapearing.
The resized photo dose not look as good as the full screen one.
The real thing looks much better then the photo.

thanks hopper for including my DPC album cover entry. I too thought it would do much better than it did. At the end of the day, I loved it & that's all that matters to me!
thanks again!

All of mine for a start ;D hoho

I often look at the highest rated on DPC and wonder why some of them are higher than others such as these. They are all high scoring but if you look at some of the photographs above them it does provoke certain questions.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/125/thumb/32757.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/125/thumb/32757.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/169/thumb/53734.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/169/thumb/53734.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/163/thumb/52353.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/163/thumb/52353.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Looking at these makes for a very good argument to the fact that a big percentage of peoples votes are added to meeting the challenge, and thus never 100%% on your photography. - I personally think there are some stinkers up there.

For example::

I feel this is one of the best photos on DPC >> ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/220/thumb/86457.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/220/thumb/86457.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Yet it ranks lower than these>>
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/39/thumb/7519.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/39/thumb/7519.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/62/thumb/12004.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/62/thumb/12004.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/183/thumb/58358.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/183/thumb/58358.jpg', '/') + 1) . I don't mean anything nasty by that - just I would expect it to do better in a Free Study than the others.
