Well done everyone. I did not get out to shoot much after the first few weekends, but I did learn a lot about birding and rather enjoyed seeing all the interesting birds that everyone posted. |

34. Dark eyed "Gray Headed" Junco
35. Lazuli Bunting
36. American Gold Finch
37. Evening Grosbeak (female) male
38. Song Sparrow
39. Terrible photo of an unspecified chickadee. I got some good glimpses of him but I don't know chickadees well; maybe Mountain, as it was very monochrome
40. Black Brown Headed Cowbird (not really sure why I put black... I knew it was clearly brown. Thanks, Richard, for correction)
41. out-the-window-of-a-car-shot of some variety of domestic chickens
42. American Wigeon (pair)
43. Mountain Bluebird
44. Lincoln's Sparrow

47. Budgerigar! I technically also have Zebra and Society Finches for pets as seen but I didn't want to harass them.

I saw two today that I didn't see all month either... and common to boot. Ah well, still was fun and pushed me to explore more around LA where I work a week or two a month. Got 11 firsts, largely from here in LA. Equally fun seeing the results from everyone else. Lots I've never seen before. |

Just a few notes for anyone interested.
We've had terrible weather this "spring". Very cold and high winds. The easterly winds were probably what drove the Northern Wheatear to land. Other European birds are appearing as well, but unfortunately I didn't get to see any of them. European Golden Plovers (dozens and dozens) and Black Tailed Godwits. But the rarest of all was a Ross's Gull! Newspaper article about it here:

And wouldn't you know it, today I saw 3 birds that I didn't see the entire month of April (loon, grouse & sparrow). |

Sorry, no puffins. I don't think they've returned to breed yet. In any case I'd have to take a tour boat (which are not operating yet) to see them on the cliffs. I don't have a decent shot of a puffin. Maybe this summer.

My last batch:
71. Caspian Tern
72. American Crow
73. Rock Pigeon
74. Barn Swallow
75. Yellow Warbler
76. Ruby-crowned Kinglet
77. Yellow-rumped Warbler
One less than last year, which is a little disappointing, but some new birds for me, which is always exciting. The extended winter weather kept many of the later migrants away. Still a great time. |

I'm coming to the end of my South Carolina vacation, and still need to sort and identify everything, so it will probably be this weekend before I make post my last batch.
I have learned more about birds than I imagined I would. And my wife have only really lost her patience once or twice.

#59-
Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Selasphorus platycercus.
#60-
Loggerhead Shrike, Lanius ludovicianus.
And that is the end of my April birds. The weather has been cold, snowy and windy for about 10 days. Our migrating birds are just showing up now. I've had a damaged leg and ankle which really slowed me down. Otherwise, I enjoyed this side challenge very much and learned a lot about birds. |

Those are most of the "readily available" birds... I know of a few more/where to get them so we'll see how many more I can get, but I won't be putting up that many again :)
Regarding the Sandhills- they tend to hang out up here near Steamboat for a large portion of the summer. There's a contest each year to try and get the first photo, but they do hang around a long time, typically walking around in the fields (as pictured) and not even really in true wetlands. There seemed to be a typical number up here, though I didn't see/hear as many flocks as I had last year (relatively new to this area). |
This is a good time of year around Steamboat. Not far from there (outside Hayden) is a Sharp Tailed Grouse lek, and if I recall you should still be able to see and hear the booming now. I've been wanting to get back up there to see them for a while, but haven't been able to. |
