| Help! I am looking to step up to a DSL. I am looking at the Canon Digital Rebel and 10D and the Nikon D70 and D100. Everyone says the Nikons are great but when I look at the images they appear soft to me. Even after just doing a shoot with a $3800 Nikon D1X, I think the images I get out of my Olympus 5050z are sharper and cleaner. What does everybody think? Do the Nikon's have a soft focus issue? Can the older Nikon D100 still compete on image quality with the newer cameras? |

I've seen photos come out of the D70 and the D100 that are *extremely* sharp.
However, I, for one, actually *like* a softer photograph 98% of the time, so...

| The nikon d70 is excellent I just bought one a few weeks ago. I have been using nikon for years, they are very durable, great lens selection, and very nice pictures. I like them a little better than canon. |

Easy ... they arn't LOL
I went Canon as I already had Canon glass from my old 35mm.
However, I also read read lot of reviews in magasines when I was buying mine and 4/5 reviews which included the 10D, 300D, D70 and D100 seemed to place them in the same order ...
Gold award 10D
Silver award D70 (interestingly always seems to beat the D100)
and then the 300D and D100 varied but usually ended up in the top 5 or 6.
As for which is better, seriously, Nikon or Canon .... there is no answer. Both are excellent, some people prefer Canon, some Nikon ... and anyone who seriously insists one beats the other by a clear margin has to be biased as it is subjective and also a featire that matters to one person may not be as important as another feature for another (for instance the spot metering, Nikon users love it, I don;t miss it at all and prefer the other features of the 10D).
Overall, the best review I ever read that compared them at some point (Steve's digicams, DPReview, somewhere credible like that) ended up stating that there was so little between them you could not choose, so if you had Canon glass go Canon, Nikon glass go Nikon.
If you have no glass then I think you can;t beat the 10D or D70 and then you need to be looking into your longer term lens route as to decide which path to take.
Mind you, introduce the 20D and you have a very different story ;)

I L-O-V-E my D70. However, if you want a really in depth look at all the cameras you're considering visit

Just two quick notes - you can compare up to two or three cameras at a time - you can do a comparison chart by feature and by test results.
All cameras undergo the same test (this guy seems to really know his stuff)
Test pages last about 15 pages (you'll find them when you click "review") keep clicking past the marketing/tech specs- there are quite a few pages in thre
Also, read the forum posts for each camera. Every camera has a discussion forum/thread.
Hope this helps. I used the site to figure out if I wanted to get a D70 or a D100. The D70 won because it had WAY better features/did better in tests, etc. even though it was less expensive. You're really getting a great deal with teh D70. I'm sure the others are absolutely amazing as well though. |

I'd shorten your list ot the Canon 20D and Nikon D70. these are the latest generation from each manufacturer. Before you buy either, make sure you budget at least the price of the body for lenses and accessories, and realize that you will spend more yet as the "bug" set in.
Are the pics from a DSLR "softer" than from a P&S? Yes, most of the time. The in-camera sharpening is stronger by default on the consumer cams. That's not a good thing, you want to sharpen in post-processing where you have control of how it is done.
The quality of the lens in use also has a great deal to do with how soft the images are out of the camera. You will soon realize why "pro level" lenses are so expensive.
One final thought... take a hard look at the lenses available from Canon & Nikon, with particular attention to the areas of photography that interest you the most. If you feel one system is superior, buy that brand of body. You are really buying into a system, and you will spend more on lenses than on the body eventually, and keep them longer.

Get the 10d, I have the rebel and mark ii, the 10d is tried and true. It has been around, I think it is the most reliable camera of the bunch. The 20d is still 'new' could have issues and the upgrades will be good but I think the money difference will not be worth it. I think you can get a good deal on a 10d now.
And I would spend less on the body and MORE on the lens. |

The answer is - whichever you feel happiest holding and working with.
You may like the 300D being quite light. Not to mention saving you a few $$ for lenses/accessories
You may like the D70's feel and lenses on offer and good feature set for the price.
You may like the 10D's metal body and slightly heavier weight and dropping price compared to the 20D and Canon's lenses.
You may like the 20D best because it's the newest, fastest and most noiseless camera, although it's naturally most expensive.

Alot of the soft focus issues come along with camera setup also. Was it all auto, etc.? Mine is set up for shooting RAW, so I have almost everything turned off (not sure why...guess I could have it ALL on and on high, also).
the points on lenses and the new generation are great points to ponder.
D70 has been ranked above the D100 most of the time. It depends on what you want. One thing that the D100 has...built like a tank. So if you plan on dropping it, playing in the rain or rafting...there ya go.
Feel and comfort in hand is very important. I went with the D70 (instead of waiting for the 20D), because alot of the controls were where I already was use to, so quicker learning curve.

of those right there, i'd agree with kirbic, and shorten your selection to the d70 and 20d. you should really try to get your hands on one of each and use them. it's really going to be a LOT different than your current olympus, so you will have a bit of a learning curve to get used to. personally, i love my d70, and i think that for the money, it's the best value of a dSLR out there right now. you just can't get as much for that price.
oh, and one other small note, the d1x isn't 3800 dollars, at least not anymore :)

Not really better I just prefer them because thats what i have been using since I started. I geuss it kind of like ford and chevy. One is not better than the other, just your personal prefrance.

It's made out of plastic, and you can buy a much better camera for about $300. more . I also read something about the softwear is different , and the something with the white ballance check out ebay , there is a lot of 10d for sale , if you look you can get a good price

Plastic can be a lot stronger and more durable than metal. It won't dent as easily, it won't chip as easily, it's lighter, it isn't as affected by heat/cold, so won't expand and contract or burn/freeze your hands, it can absorb more shock during an impact, etc etc.

You are right, the DRebel is plastic, a very durable plastic. I have had mine for over a year now and have had no issues with it. Why suggest that someone spend $300 more for a camera if the DRebel has everything they need?
I also have the hacked firmware installed in my DRebel which enables most of those additional things the software difference makes.
Granted, the 10D is an awesome camera and I am on the pre-purchase list for the 20D at Ritz. However, the DRebel is a completely capable inexpensive DSLR. I am getting the 20D because I am going to start shooting paid events and needed a backup camera. I will however be using my DRebel at these events as well.
Just my 2 cents. I was just wondering why you gave such a harsh warning to "stay away fro the rebel". Thought you might know something that every one else didn't.

| plastic is plastic I shot this camera , and I personal did'nt like it . it felt like a the 35mm rebel for a few more bucks buy the 10 d |
