Hello people! A good friend of mine is getting married. He's Turkish and the marriage is in Istanbul. I've been invited and plan to make good use of the trip :)

I'll be gone there from 18th-24th May tentatively. I have some questions:

1. Has anyone been to Istanbul before for photography?
2. What are the best places to shoot there? Even the unconventional ones which aren't normally listed on websites.
3. The marriage is on 19th. So I will get 20th-24th all to myself and my camera. Does it make sense to visit places other than Istanbul? If so which ones?

My brother just got back from Istanbul. There are all kinds of beautiful Mosques and palaces there.

I recently went to Istanbul. I had a great time there. Great food (fresh fish like seabass everywhere), lovely people and amazing historical sites.

Many of the best sites are in the old town. Both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue mosque are within a stones throw from one another, and the Topkapi palace close too. Check out the river boat trips down the Bosphorus and all around the Golden horn. It certainly is a beautiful city full of culture.

As for day trip you can try Cappadocia. Google it.

Alex's sites are my favorites as well. I stayed in old town and you can't take a bad picture there. Spend the time to visit the Basilica Cistern, photograph the sunrise over the straights of the Bosporous. Turkey is a photographic wonderland, if I had a few extra days in Turkey I would be torn between the ruins of Ephesus ( or the closer less busy but less impressive Pergamon) or the geologic wonderland of Goreme

You can go to Hell...or at least the Gate to it

I thought Istanbul was one of the best places I've been for photography. East meets West. Fabulous street photography opportunities as well as the sightseeing stuff. The Hagia Sophia is amazing. Don't leave out the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market - touristy but full of life
