This little guy fell out of the tree earlier this week, he went across the field over a road and was sitting in front of a Montessori school right in the entrance and would not let the kids out or the Moms come in, they called me and told me our owl was over there which cracked me up, they thought is was one of the parents but when I got over there it turned out to be one of the juveniles. The Montessori school wanted to get him away from their door so I told them to wait a minute while I got my camera. I ran and quickly got it then took some shots before talking a broom and slowly getting the owl to back away from the door. In the mean time an Animal Control Officer arrived and she talked to a rescue group that thought it would be best to get it back over near the tree with the nest so we helped her coax it into a box and took it back near the tree. About 15 minutes later it started climbing into a tree and for the last few days I find it in a different tree every day but it has not found it's way back to the nest. From what I understand Mom will still care for it even if it is not in the nest but I know we would like it to find its way back to the nest. This is a shot from earlier today and it is looking more and more grown up so it should be flying very soon. |

Held these back, one is an outtake I would have loved to use but the editing would have been suspect and the other was my entry. The babies are starting to limb and are flapping quite often, one fell out of the tree and I got to watch him climb back up the tree a few times so they are great fun to watch. more photos will follow as time permits. |

Wanted to update my Bald Eagle picture. I held off on posting it because I was considering using it for the April FS, but chose something else.

Whew. First of all, I hope it's okay to count birds at the zoo (combo of exhibits, indoor flight house, outdoor flight area, and the zoo grounds)... Second, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I spent hours some days trying to ID birds - I felt like I was back in grad school again. I really did learn so much - not just about birds but about how to shoot BIF. And I made some new friends here on DPC. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this! I really knew nothing at the beginning - I couldn't tell a sparrow from a swallow. I think I've found a new hobby...

Well after a slow start the weather and my schedule co-operated and let me get out a few times here towards the end of the month. I was able to get almost 90 birds. Short of my total from last year. The migration seems to be a bit delayed and many of the usual suspects have not yet arrived in South East PA. Poor Richard. I can see the weather for Colorado and it seems like snow is the norm this month. He did very well in spite of the challenges that snow and cold threw his way. I enjoyed seeing all of the posts from everyone. The exotic birds from distant places were especially nice. I can't wait to do this again next year! |

I really enjoyed this SC. I'm done at 79! Not too bad for a very wintry April. Another 16" of snow forecast for the next 24 hours. That's on top of the 40" we received in April. Learned a lot. Thanks, everyone, for the effort.
This side challenge provided a good place to participate in a photography related exercise while the site's been dominated by the hateful clique voting of the TPL.

I saw some kind of hawk while on a morning walk but I didn't have my camera with me cause it was supposed to rain. I also saw some dolphins while on a boat to try to get some other gulls (the boat had to turn around and go back to the dock) - plus I've seen plenty of swallows but they are so fast I can't get them in-flight.
I would like to say a huge thank you to Gary for starting this and to everyone who participated. I've had a ball shooting, looking at all your birds. I've learned a lot! |

A couple of questions:
-did you see any bird you were not able to get a photo of? I saw a bald eagle soaring overhead while I was driving.
-what other types of wildlife did you see while you were out birdwatching? I saw squirrels (got lots of pics), an otter (no pic) and an Arctic Hare (again, no pic). |
I had trouble with the hawks ... seen Red tail, Goshawk, Red Shoulder... but only as I was driving 80mph on the freeway...was not safe to slam on my brakes,... or stick my camera out the window for a panning shot while driving with my feet.

I saw many birds I wasn't able to photograph - mostly waterfowl but others as well. Redheads, goldeneyes, horned and pied-billed grebes, others that I'm not remembering at the moment. Taking this field ornithology course has been such a fantastic experience. As a complete novice, I've learned so much in such a short time I'm planning on taking it again next year, and getting involved with the local birding community. We are lucky to have such an active community in my area. |

I've seen a Prairie Falcon twice, but no photo, yet. We are forecast to receive 16" of snow tonight. (On top of 40" in April.) The bears are out of hibernation, but I haven't seen one, yet. Maybe today. |
