I haven't yet seen one reason stated, in this thread or elsewhere, that would cause me to even consider voting for Romney. And just speaking as a woman, I don't much cotton to the idea of living under a Taliban-like rule here in the United States, so I wouldn't vote for him or any Republican in any event, as he and they would be beholden to the freak teabaggers' agenda. Yes indeed, given the choice, it's fairly easy to overlook Obama's flaws.

Please tell me that was a sarcastic paragraph... are you just fighting fire with fire?

Look, I'm pretty middle-of-the-road, I voted for Obama 4 years ago, and even I take offense to the ignorance that you spouted, considering I'll probably flip on this vote.

I have no problem with women, gays, hispanics, blacks, poor people, or old people. I just don't like the lazy or the criminals - whomever that may be. Those people should not get rewarded in any way.

And Taliban-like? That's the first I've even heard of that one.

And I know plenty of people that are comfortably oblivious to Obama's shortcomings.

When I say "Republicans," I'm talking about elected officials, NOT YOU. Duh!! You're just the sucker who believes their bullshit. I'm talking about their policies. Capiche??

...Yet, for all the Koreans, Vietnamese and Iraqi's that might not have benefited from admittedly over-reaching US policy, there are a bunch of Neighbors to the North that would have been eating a great deal more schnitzel, or perhaps borscht, if not for the United States.

...and of course when everyone else was fighting the Germans, you opted to sit back, sell arms to all and finally entered only after being attacked by Japan. There is no denying the fact that the USA played a major role in ending the war, but there exists little proof that had they stayed home that Germany would have prevailed.

As for your neighbours to the north, other than Canada how many others are there?

... You do of course know where borscht originates from right?

Ray

Brennan already gave a reasoned response to the suggestion that Germany would have been defeated without US involvement; however, since you called out my knowledge of culinary history as well as geography...

Schnitzel is a reference to what all Canadians would be eating without US involvement in WWII;

Borscht is a reference to what all Canadians might be eating, with a dollop of sour cream perhaps, if the United States was not around to oppose USSR in the cold war.

"Neighbors to the north," (leaving the "U" out stateside to celebrate independence from England) was a nice way of saying "Canadians."

As liberal as I am, and as much as I like Canada, (and would seriously consider moving there) it seems unfair for a country that benefits enormously from a giant friendly bodyguard, to play Monday-morning quarterback the last half century of history to somehow disparage their southern benefactor on their use of military budget. Yet, perhaps Canada is so woven into U.S. culture and society as to be separate but attached enough that criticism is really sort of a self criticism, or hemispheric criticism.

Nothing to see there. Keep your focus on Romney and how rich and out of touch he is. There's no need to hold Obama accountable for anything he does because everything he does is awesome, simply by the fact that HE does it. Remember, HE is our beloved leader and to criticize him would be racist.

...yeah, that's right, I've turned. I've seen the light. I drank the kool-aid. I am devoting my life to telling everyone how evil rich guys like Romney are and am preaching the divinity of Obama like all the rest of his followers.

...a bit of a sarcastic rant, but just tired and amazed at what this prez gets away with.

Man, it's pretty sad for the Democrats to know they are only polling a few points above this platform. ;) Ouch!

I can't comprehend how she doesn't see that sounds as over-the-top ridiculous as some people on the right saying Obama is a foreign born Muslim Commie bent on destroying the country. People that think this way are the reason we are sinking lower and lower in our political discourse, IMO.

...Looking forward to the day this election is over and done with soon so we all can go back to hating our own preferred groups... none of this generalized and all encompassing stuff.

By "selling arms" I assume you mean the lend lease act. America's primary role in the second world war was as a manufacturing base, and the lend lease act kept our position as impartial, because the far left were backing Stalin (before his break with Hitler) and the far right was backing Hitler; so Roosevelt was limited to what he could do, so he cooked up the lend lease act. But without American aide given through the lend lease act it is hard to imaging how the Russian front would have been kept going.

"As the war progressed, most of the Allied nations proved capable of manufacturing sufficient frontline weapons for their troops, however this led to a drastic reduction in the production other needed items. Materials from Lend-Lease filled this void in the form of munitions, food, transport aircraft, trucks, and rolling stock. The Red Army in particular took advantage of the program and by war's end approximately two-thirds of its trucks were American-built Dodges and Studebakers. Also, the Soviets received around 2,000 locomotives for supplying its forces at the front."

As far as "there exists little proof that had they stayed home that Germany would have prevailed" show me any single bit of proof for how any action not taken throughout history would have changed history. Alternative history is a genre of science fiction, not the domain of provable assumptions.

In this day and age, drug testing is almost synonymous with interviewing/hiring.....why shouldn't welfare recipients be required to uphold the same behaviors to get their "paycheck"?

Well, nobody is advocating an unintelligent reduction, but cut dollars are cut dollars. There's no two ways about it.

Defense is certainly bloated, we were geared up for a battle with the likes of the USSR for so long that we had a tough transition to urban anti-insurgency warfare. Perhaps we can streamline and learn to aim first, shoot second, not the other way around.
