Bed time for me, but in the morning it will be October. I'll set up the images page then. Any one else interested in playing???

If you have a plastic shoehorn you could use it for a filter :-)

This gives me an idea to try some very fine metal mesh that my daughter used when she was making pottery glazes. (Just have to find it!)

A plastic bag and my see through jockstrap should do the trick for this side challenge.

Heating (not necessarily boiling, but you want to be close) is a good practice if you want truly clear ice. The solubility of gasses in water drops dramatically near the boiling point, so you can "de-gas" the water by heating it. Now, how much it will re-accumulate before you have a chance to cool and freeze it, well that's up for debate. :-)

Quite true, and as a fun aside, this is why coral reefs only occur in warm shallow waters.

When they make block ice at ice houses, they bubble air through the water as it is cooling to near freezing. The rising larger bubbles entrain the small bubbles and take them to the surface, making the ice blocks clear.

Is that true for Coral Reefers too?

Heh. :) I'm simply going to have to do more research in order to answer your question.

Perhaps this thread will encourage me to drag out some old glass if time permits... the Zeiss Biotar has been calling to me recently. Hmmm.

Vaseline on blister pack plastic if people don't want to mess up UV filters
Glassware of any kind that you can shoot through
Ice - I've heard you can make filters by boiling water till it has no oxygen and then making ice in a concave glass bottom. I'm going to try it. (Is water still water if it has no oxygen?)

Pinholes, don't forget pinholes.

And without oxygen, water is just H2.

:) There's a difference between molecular oxygen and dissolved oxygen....

If you want to try this be sure to use a VERY smooth and clean glass, don't boil the water, that won't help - you need pure water, boiling only kills stuff, and actually just concentrates impurities. Go buy some triple-distilled water if you can find it, or at the very least distilled (not filtered) water.

The final key is to freeze it slowly, a freezer at 30 degrees is your friend, as a colder environment is likely to cause random nucleation, and subsequently opaque ice.

Hope that helps.

I like this angle of attack. I'm afraid of commitment too, so put me on the same list as the general.

You are both not 'officially' on the list, but both welcome to play if you feel like it.

Absolutely okay. I really want people to take this side challenge in any reasonably relevant direction that suits them.

I expect many, MANY entries from bspurgeon and his iPhone, albeit most will be dupes. :P

This should be fun - can we create a running list of ideas for the lenses & filters?

Examples:
Lensbaby
UV filter with vaseline
Custom bokeh cutout mask
Shoot through shower door
Shoot through glass block

others?

I would like to. All I really have at the moment is my cunning bvymade pinhole, but I hope to pick up some some truly bizarre ideas here.
