Well, how many months and 14 threads later... the endless discussion of this topic is excrutiatingly painful. Someone really needs to set up a webinar and teach a course on fine art so we can get on with our lives!!

Run the challenge already!! Get the jury set up!

Healthy discussion ought never be painful, as it only through discussion that we can expand our minds. If everyone pulled the same way the world would tip over.

I used to have a very closed mind relative to "Posthumous Type" challenges and am now a great deal more open minded about the entries to these challenges. I still think that a lot of them are crap, but at least now I give them due consideration before I arrive at that conclusion and surprisingly enough, several of them do garner a very high score from me. :O)

An invitation to a Fine Arts Challenge carries with it all the excitement, drama, and glamor of Cinderella's Ball.

And we all do our best to turn our pumpkins into magnificent carriages for this event!

With grand anticipation, then we wait to see whom the Jury will decide gets to wear the glass slipper?

Certainly, not any one who dresses like IKEA!

I do hope we have another one soon. ;-)

If you don't like the idea of a Jury, then ignore them... the challenge still gets votes and ribbons like everything else if that's what matters to you.

I'd agree with both these statements. I don't see the point in limiting the scope of the challenge, it's fascinating to see what people come up with without any limits in the previous challenges. And as far as the jury goes, it's just an added element that nobody needs to pay any attention to if they are against the concept; the peer-review voting is the main attraction, just like it always is in DPC. But the juries have produced some very interesting discussion and feedback over the years, and I don't see how that can be in any way a negative.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here, but a "Jury" would translate into the same effectively "meaningless" juries of the past Art challenges. I just enjoy reading their interpretations (they being the more artsy fartsy people in our community), as it helps expand my own opinions about this difficult-to-define "art" thing. The last time we had a juried challenge, I felt I gained the most just by reading the insightful comments from the Jury. It was a memorable growing experience. Maybe if people openly commented on images in voting it could be a similar effect, buy alas they do not. Plus, that kind of back-and-forth commentary adds a certain 'je ne sais quoi' that you just don't get out of normal photo commentary.

+1 juried or not. I like the idea of a series of tighter themed ones.

^^^ That sounds like a nursery rhyme (a creepy one)

Nursery Rhymes or Mexican Food would also be acceptable themes for a fine arts challenge, IMO.

I will say one thing for sure.... Hardcore specific, or absolutely nothing, either is better than some bastardized concession that attempts to make everyone happy by being just specific enough to be useless, but vague enough to cause a controversy...

Sweeet...

Although might I suggest a Monet/Manet challenge... Voters could guess which of the two painters' style was chosen, there should be just enough overlap in preferred subject material to make it interesting. :)

ETA: Any sort of specificity would be super cool... And would make the whole series much more fun..

Maybe we should all go suggest some specific topics, each something like "Fine Arts: ___________ Exhibit"

Considering that there truly does not exist any consensus at to what exactly constitute "Fine Arts" why not simply call it a "Fine Arts Free Study", thereby removing and potential for bickering.

I have always hankered after fine art, ever so broadly and vaguely. Make it so.

I think this would be great.

I like the suggestion for the texture overlay.

I'm a big fan of getting this going...

Only extra rule I'd add, is allowing two weeks to take the photos... and two weeks to vote... :)

I'd love this, Im a torn individual between more popular shots on here and the more obscure art ones that don't appeal to the main stream,

What was wrong with the art of 2011 jury, don't mean the whole dq spat thing either.

I still think it's a good idea.

from one who is in favor or more confined challenges, it doesn't get any better broader than "fine art", so i vote nay, however i dont have to to play, im sure there are many others that would like this.
