Mirror lenses are interesting to use, partly because of the reach, and partly because it takes a little time to learn how to make the best of the bokeh of doughnuts. I have several and find that they are not as sharp as my other lenses, so it's a compromise between shooting long lens or shooting a shorter lens and cropping. Stability is critical when you get way out there like that too. Just a tiny amount of shake makes a huge difference in sharpness.

Well, I had a good time with that lens finding creative ways to brace it against something to get a steady shot. If not shooting wildlife, it takes me right out of my comfort zone, which is fun. I'm sure you'll have a blast! [eta] And of course, don't forget to post some shots here.

Pixelpig, thank you, the rest of the menu tree I find no problem, but for some reason I totaly missed that. Much impressed so far with lens. 1000mm for $240, just have to see what quality I get, depth of field tiny, as expected, so here's to the next run out!

I have a Sony A55, and recently had the luck to pick up an f8 500mm mirror lens, with 2x converter (effective 1000mm). great for trying out some wildife shots I thought. ;)
Only problem is my Sony will not recognise it! when I push the shutter button it says If you want to use this lens set allow its use in custom menu. WHERE IS THE CUSTOM MENU?
bit type specific here I know but can anyone help?

That lens has no auto-anything, the camera can't interact w/the lens, which is why you go to the Custom menu, which is the second menu, the one with the little gear icon.
