Nope, that's really good news. Scores above 6 are very nice, above 7 is fantastic, and above 8 is ultra rare.

I live right in the heart of a big city, so I walked to the botanical gardens and took a photo there. Not awe inspiring, but you work with what you have to meet the challenge theme. I resisted the urge to shoot a nice cityscape, because to me it's not a "landscape". Sometimes I don't vote in challenges I've entered, but I did this time, and I took into account the theme (landscape at night) and weighed this alongside how much I liked the photo. A photo I really liked of trees at night scored higher than a photo I really liked of a cityscape at sunset. I think that's fair voting. Other people might choose to be moved solely on how appealing they find the image; personally, that's putting the challenge topic too far into the back seat for me. (That's not to say I don't like unique interpretations to a theme; in fact, I tend to favour them, it shows imagination.)

Sure, in this challenge us city folk are at a disadvantage versus someone overlooking a soaring majestic forest... but that happens all the time. (When was the last time Larus/LalliSig lost a "sky" challenge that he entered? :) If the theme is "majestic churches" then anyone living in Italy is at a huge advantage. That's just how it goes!

ditto (on both accounts)

PS I don't do DNMCs so my voting wasn't effected by definitions.

Not sure I would want to venture into Central Park after dark, I have heard some horror stories.
Yes, you are right. Such a pity, it is a nice park.

True, but one don't have to enter every contest. Maybe that type of thinking is too cynical?

For the record, I didn't vote any of the good 'non-landscape' images down much due to them not being what I deem to be a landscape.
01/18/2012 04:47:53 PM · #18
You have to bear in mind not everyone has the luxury of a rural landscape at their disposal!
01/18/2012 04:43:17 PM · #19
I have not voted yet. There are very good shots, but my opinion is that:
night is night = stars, moon, dark sky,...
landscape should include nature = trees, sea, mountains,...
Now I have to decide wheter my vote is based on the previous facts, or if I just consider how much I like the photos
I will leave it for tomorrow... now I'm really falling sleep... ;)

Now, there are many interpretations when it comes to art... but this is what I found when I looked it up:

land·scape
noun
1. a section or expanse of rural scenery, usually extensive, that can be seen from a single viewpoint.
2. a picture representing natural inland or coastal scenery.
3. Fine Arts . the category of aesthetic subject matter in which natural scenery is represented.
4. Obsolete . a panoramic view of scenery; vista.

I don't want this to skew results, but it is interesting how the genre inspires us all differently.

land·scape/ˈlan(d)ˌskāp/
Noun:
All the visible features of an area of countryside or land, often considered in terms of their aesthetic appeal.
Verb:
Improve the aesthetic appearance of (a piece of land) by changing its contours, adding ornamental features and plantings.
Synonyms:
scenery - view - scene - prospect

I would define it as scenery from a distance... the land as far as the eye can see
01/18/2012 12:41:17 PM · #23
Poses the question, what defines a landscape? Makes you think.
01/18/2012 12:00:39 PM · #24
Some of um don,t seem very landscapey to me.

You have rated 75 of 75 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 15 images (20%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.6533.

Hidden in my average score is a broad range distribution. I gave 2-10s, 2-9s, 6-8s and 10-7s. There were some remarkably good nighttime shots in this challenge. Of note, I commented on 20% of the images, which is a big % comments for me.
