Thank you all so much! You've very helpful and heartening. I knew nothing about those side challenges...I think I shall look into that.

Greetings! I've been receiving challenge updates for a few months now, but have not taken advantage of what this site has to offer, nor have I submitted any photos to the challenges(my pitiful excuse being that I am a student with very limited time to pick up my neglected Nikon D3000). Any recommendations, tips, advice, etc. for a new member?

1. Shoot, shoot, shoot!

2. Go through past challenges and portfolios and see if there is something along the lines of what you would like to do.

3. Shoot, shoot, shoot! It doesn't have to be for a challenge, or a side challenge. But the more you shoot the more you will learn how your camera responds under different situations. This helps you anticipate what it will do, and what you need to do, to get the effect you want when you are shooting important shots.

Good place to begin is commenting on images entered in both the official and side challenges. Making thoughtful comments will highten your own awareness when you make and edit your own images. Make as many or few comments as your time allows. Just keep it up on a regular basis for practice. Remember, your perceptions and feelings about an image are valid, so you can comment (and vote) without feeling a need to be a master of technical matters.

Try voting on challenge entries. That will also sharpen your observations. Search the forums for threads about voting to get the idea just how differently people approach the task.

Post an image in a side challenge (DPChallenge Forums\Side Challenges and Tournaments). No need for perfect pictures, no scoring, easy to do. Take as much or as little time as you have to come up with just about anything that fits the topic. Start with the current "Post your blurry shots here" thread, for example. When your image gets a comment, you can click a check box marking it "helpful", which is polite (unless the comment was really unhelpful), and it does encourage commenters to keep on commenting.

Read a lot of the forum discussion threads. Follow the Challenge Results\Posthumus Ribbons thread for a different set of ideas about art and photography.
Click on user names and browse people's challenge entries and portfolio postings. Notice their statistics in the upper left hand part of their profile page. Click on their favorites numbers to see images you might otherwise miss. Browse through the DPC galleries by topic. Click through to images and notice the comments and scores (if any). Join in the forum discussions (like you just did).

Eventually pick a challenge, make an image for that topic, and enter. Sometimes that takes a lot of thought and effort, sometimes it is very easy. Do it for learning, without being too impressed or intimidated by the difficutly of winning an electronic ribbon.

Welcome to DPC. Enjoy yourself.

Hello and Welcome

Parsed for Tiny. And welcome.

The only way to do it, Erin_Clark_007, is to do it. Choose a challenge, make a date with your camera, and go shoot for it.
