Well, that helps explain some apparent troll behavior.

I lumped "urbanscapes" in with "landscapes", and of course "seascapes", so the category's sort of... ermmm... FLEXible :-)

The old hat trick. Mine is just full of words.... Bottomless, full of sound and fury.

omg. I think Bear thinks mine is a landscape.

Mine too!! Ha ha ha this is fun!!!
Can I join you?
Or maybe I like Jagar's "voila" pick from a hat method better... hmmmmmmm :)

I guess. 3% flowers can seem like 3% too many if you hate flowers.

Grog's usually been averaging 6-10 per freestudy, but as time goes on it gets harder to avoid rehashing Grog's earlier observations. I don't want his brain to burn out, he doesn't have much to spare. (Don't tell him I said that.)

After they're all together, I compare them as a group & give the one I like the best the highest vote among the landscapes. Then I vote all the people into a group so I can compare & rank them. I do the same with the animals & bugs & flowers. Flowers are usually only about 3-4% of the entries, but they are my favorite part of a FS. The rest is an interesting collection of non-comparable shots which I vote one at a time. At the end, they're all ranked & then I give it a final review. All my 10's get compared & votes adjusted. All the 9's & so on. I change my vote several times during this process.

I would describe DPC as landscape-dominated but with a coterie of free spirits. Most of my learning & growth comes from the example set by the free spirits.

That's a fascinating approach. Never occurred to me. I'm going to try something like that this week. Although, obviously, landscapes are very high on my personal-preference list so I'm not gonna sweep them out of the way :-) Plus, I'd disagree with your statement that DPC is landscape-dominated... Penny has a theory that we each tend to think DPC is heavily-populated by whatever it is we tend to like least :-)

ETA: THIS week, DPC is dominated by dead leaves on the street.

I vote a FS based first on if I think it is well done. Even if it does not appeal to me, it will at least get a positive side vote for being a good shot. (for instance, I am not big on flowers, but a well done one still usually gets a 6 or 7).

Second is if it appeals to me personally. Depending on the shot, this can weigh more heavily than the first item. The highest votes go to the shots that connect with me in some way.

Oh, and anything that inspires a Grog comment gets at a least a 7.

Working towards the DPC ideal is not my goal, working for my clients ideal is. I find it very hard to shoot just for DPC, as it does not lead to more paid work.
I did a series of Dutch landscapes this summer that I intend to publish, so I entered some of them. I have my opinion, and free will, perhaps instead of telling anyone who disagrees with you that they are just wrong, you could attempt to see their viewpoint? I have not said anything about you, just the general DPC voter, and I say again, they can not tell the difference between crap and quality based purely on image. That is my opinion, that is all it is. We all get one, that is mine. Vote it a 1 if you need.

My reply was not in any way intended to tell you that you're wrong. It was just offering a different perspective, and expressing some surprise at the condemnation of the voters as a group.

I'm not sure what it was that you were expressing as a viewpoint outside of your views on the voting.

I guess I'm not quite sure where you're coming from if you're not shooting for DPC. If you're a professional shooting for clients, what difference does the voting body here at DPC make to you at all?

It doesn't matter to me what you do, and I simply expressed my opinion and perspective.....if you took that as a personal affront, that's on you.

Have a nice day.

You can not have it both ways, you attack voters telling them they can not tell the difference between crap and quality then get upset because someone disagrees with you. You have a mirror, best to look there first.

This is a great question. I look at the image on the screen, and than give it a score somewhere between 1 and 10.

But that is just me
